LHCb Core Software Meeting

Date and Location

21 March 2007
10:30 - 12:00
CERN (2-R-030)

Florence, Gloria, Hubert, Marco Ca., Marco Cl. (minutes), Markus, Matt, Patrick, Philippe, Thomas,

  • LCG 50b (new COOL and may be CORAL) is going to be released on Friday.
It is needed by Atlas. Marco Cl. needs CORAL to test the LFC replica lookup, but it is not extrmely urgent: beginning of April is ok.
  • New ROOT just released (5.15/04): new packaging, but libRIO conflicts with the one in OpenScientist

Software Releases

Gaudi (Hubert)

  • Few fixes
    • genconf
    • HistogramPersistencySvc (to write to CASTOR)
  • Patch by Vanya on AlgContextSvc not yet in the release
  • Testing the built with "make -j" (will be the default in the nightlies)
    • the install area creates problem with parallel build because of incorrect dependencies

Marco Ca.: Chris will provide a patch for a bug in MsgStream format.

LHCb, Boole, Brunel (Marco Ca.)

  • Boole is ready, Brunel almost ready
    • Patrick suggest to move th3e physics desktop
  • Hunting missing checks of StatusCodes

Marco Cl.:

  • the problem observed with Brunel v31r2 on SLC3 because of the threads that disconnect from the databases seems to be due to a problem with the optimizations of libstdc++ standard allocator. It seems to disappear by setting the environment variable GLIBCPP_FORCE_NEW (safer, but with performace penalties).
  • the INFO message notifying the disconnection from the DB is found to be too scarying, it will be made a bit more verbose and less worrying for users.

Gauss (Gloria)

  • DC06 version released (no production started yet)
  • work ongoing to try to recycle events for decays that takes long to be generated (30s in generation for a dimuon)
  • Gauss v30r1: generated successfully 10 min. bias events

DaVinci (Patrick)

  • v19r0 released last week
  • few changes in pre-selection are ready for next version
  • almost ready for the stripping

Philippe: (in production) we have problems with the pre-staging of DIGI files.

Panoramix (Florence)

  • Buiding v15r2 using ROOT 5.14.00d (instead of the one officialy used for Gaudi)
    • Works on Linux
    • To be built on Win32

Round Table

the migration of interfaces to LHCbKernel created problems with Doxygen documentation (we cannot find anymore which are all the implementation of an interface). The suggestion is to put in DaVinci the doxygen documentation for all the packages. Marco Ca. suggested that it should be done for all the applications. (It will mean more time to release the applications)
Because of a mistake (all DSTs sent to all Tier-1s) we ran out of space on the disk pools. The unwanted files will be soon removed (we need to identify the files and ask kindly the administrators at Tier-1s to remove them, which is qicker than remove the files ourselves)
Marco Ca.
Recently we had lot of problems with CASTOR.
Reminded that the deadline for abstracts for CHEP07 is approaching (1st of April). Philippe reminded that we have an agenda on indico to collect the abstracts.
Marco Cl.
  • Paolo Calafiura asked if it is aproblem for us to remove the default for Gaudi EventSelector. Actually it would mean to break the Gaudi policy to have sensible defaults.
  • Ganga provides the possibility of submitting ROOT scripts like any other application. To be able to do that through DIRAC, it was discussed the possibility to have install_project and SetupProject aware of ROOT, but it has been discarded: it is better/easier to get ROOT installing Gaudi.
  • Angelo Carbone proposed to run stress tests at CNAF against disks and database (CondDB) using LHCb software.
