Date and Location

November 28, 2007
10:30 - 12:30
CERN (2-R-030)

Gloria, Hubert, Marco Ca., Marco Cl. (minutes), Markus, Patrick (EVO), Philippe, Stefan

Juan, Thomas

  • Architects Forum, in the agenda
    • problem with middleware versions
    • migration to Python 2.5 (?)

Software Releases

Gaudi (Hubert, Marco Cl.)

  • Gaudi v19r6 released. Build available for OSX too (opt.+debug).
    • Added the new incident AbortEvent to jump to the next event skipping all the other algorithms in the TopAlg list.
    • Added GaudiKernel/SerializeSTL.h. Marco Ca.: problems finding the correct operator<<.

Marco Ca.:

  • does Gaudi build on the slot dev? Marco Cl.: almost there (minor glitch today), anyway LHCb cannot use it because of a bug in ROOT affecting PyCool and a bug in CORAL.

Hubert: We were planning to have Gaudi v20 as soon as the python job options are production-ready, how far are we?
Marco Ca.: gaudirun.py seems to work enough, but we need Ganga and DIRAC to be ready. Philippe: for DIRAC, we need a policy to decide if we have to use gaudirun.py or Gaudi.exe, e.g.: if the top level option file is .py use gaudirun.py otherwise use Gaudi.exe.

LHCb, Boole, Brunel (Marco Ca.)

  • Building LHCb on Gaudi v19r6 (DEV).

Gauss (Gloria)

  • Version in DEV ready to be released (still old Gaudi)
  • Discussion on the plan for supported platforms in Geant4: will ask if they can keep VS71 as a build platform (supported platform means that they run few tests). Marco Ca.: they must, at least, guarantee the build on all supported platforms.
  • LCG GENSER planning meeting on Thursday.
    • We are asked where we are with the migration to HepMC 2 (the version without CLHEP vectors).

In Gauss there are few DumpEvent functions that should be moved in a common place.

HLT (Patrick)

  • Adaptation to new T.F. is ongoing (takes time).

OnLine (Markus)

  • New version ready for LHCb v23r1.

...long discussion about another way of defining project dependencies...
Marco Ca. suggests to have a way of linking together versions of projects different from the current build-time dependency enforced by CMT. It should be possible to clearly separate what is build-time dependency and run-time dependencies, allowing (e.g.) the release of Panoramix without Online still having the possibility of adding at run time a compatible version of Online (i.d. based on the same version of LHCb).
The discussion focused on possible ways of defining the compatibilities and a consistent set of versions, like a configuration file a la LCGCMT, or a sort of database recording all the versions compatible with a version of LHCb. In any case, it is important to have a well defined set of version for the production.

Panoramix (Thomas)

  • It would be nice to have a working version of Online for every release of LHCb. (Panoramix v15r7 cannot use Online because v4r0 is broken).

We should investigate the possibility of splitting Online in sub projects.

Release and Deployment (Hubert)

  • Two full stacks has been completed:
    • based on LHCb v23r1, new tracking framework
    • based on LHCb v22r11, Online benchmak CD
  • Doxygen documentation of DaVinci ready: it takes more than 24h (1GB).
We should consider it a post-build step: do not delay the announcement just because it takes a lot of time to prepare the documentation.
  • Preparing the new LHCb terminal server (lhcbts.cern.ch).

Round Table

  • The new generators DAVID and DAWN are available (DAVID not for win32).
  • Problem with dictionary for vector<const T*>, which is not generated by G.O.D., in principle it would be possible to instruct PyCintex to reuse the dictionary for vector<T*> with a bunch of const_cast.
Marco Ca.
Can we use SLC4 to build SLC3 binaries? Hubert: yes, we can tell IT that we do not need anymore lxbuild029.
No s/w has been planned yet. We should think of having a tutorial to migrate from the DC04 way of writing algorithms to the DC06 way.
