LHCb Core Software Meeting

Date and Location

10:30 - 11:30
CERN (2-R-030)

Gloria, Hubert, Illya, Joel, Marco Ca., Marco Cl. (minutes), Markus, Paloma, Rob,

  • At the ITUM meeting last week it was announced that at the end of the month the default shell for new users will be bash instead of tcsh. Apart from the complaints about the short warning, we agreed that the support for bash in LHCb is already good enough, even though it's only (officially) at best-effort level, to let IT do the change as scheduled. We will raise the support level to "officially supported" and let the things go on.

Round Table

Marco Cl.

  • Dirac team (Ricardo) proposed a procedure to deal with branches and bugfix releases.
    • The procedure is sound (lacking only references to a bug tracking system to keep track of the issues).
    • The differences with the standard LHCb procedures are that the branches are planned in advance (while made on demand in LHCb) and they are at the project level (instead of package level as in LHCb).
    • The layout of the repository is flexible enough to accommodate the two ways, but it requires that getpack is able to check out from project level branches (and tags), which, BTW, was a planned feature.

  • LHCb will have a dedicated contact person in Geant4 for support (Andrea Dotti)

  • Conflict with LHCbGrid and LCG 60: the package pyqt has been removed in LCGCMT (it was planned, since it is superseded by pygraphics + qt), but LHCbGrid still uses it explicitly. An urgent release of LHCbGrid is needed to take into account the change.

  • Produced a script to compare project tags with the trunk, which can be added to LbScripts.
    • The support for branches should be added
    • Marco Cl.: it is multi-threaded, but the class used to communicate with SVN is not thread-safe. It must be fixed.
  • Any proposal for summer students?
    • Marco Cl. submitted a project: production of tools to handle/manipulate the environment. The aim is to have a description of the changes required in the environment independent of the shell (bash, tcsh, bat) and from the build tool (CMT, CMake), which is at the same time fast and flexible (possibly including the possibility of stacking environments).

  • Yesterday it was reported by Chris that the LHCb Coverity Integrity Manager was not accessible from outside CERN.
    • The request for opening the ports has been made. We are waiting for the security scan.
  • On the 22nd of February, the VOboxes will be switched off for few hours because of an intervention on the power supply.

  • Problem in POOL and GaudiPoolDb because of a change in ROOT 5.28-patches (see bug #77747).

Marco Ca.

  • Still problems in ROOT this morning: somebody must follow up ROOT issues. Marco Cl. will do it.
  • Windows nightly builds must be updated to LCGCMT 60. Moreover the VC9 builds must be added to lhcb-prerelease, lhcb-head and lhcb-gaudi-head.
  • Advanced tutorial slot in the "Physics and Analysis Week" (DaVinci)
    • Marco Cl. would like to investigate the porting of the "basic tutorial" to Eclipse (for the LHCb Week in one month time).
