LHCb Core Software Meeting

Date and Location

10:30 - 11:45
CERN (2-R-030)

Alex Grecu, Gloria Corti, Hubert Degaudenzi, Illya Shapoval, Joel Closier, Marco Cattaneo, Marco Clemencic (minutes), Markus Frank, Sasha Mazurov, Thomas Hartmann (EVO)

  • ROOT I/O Workshop in the afternoon
    • Markus presents our migration from POOL to ROOT
  • Linux Certification Meeting on Friday
    • Main topic: migration to SLC6 (we cannot say much because there is no Quattor template for the build servers)
  • We announced to the AF that LHCb doesn't need anymore the AA projects and external libraries to be built on Windows and that we do not need POOL anymore.
  • Discussion about the version of GCC at the AF: all the externals have been built with gcc 4.5, but the improvements in gcc 4.6 make it worth to try go to it.
    • Marco Cl. will check with Benedikt how much does it take to prepare LCGCMT for gcc 4.6 (the deadline is the release of Gaudi at the beginning of December, i.e. the ROOT release)
  • The deadline for the abstract submission to CHEP is the 28th of October.
  • New version of NeuroBayes
    • To be included in the next LCGCMT (check with LIM)

Round Table

  • Showed the plans for the integration of libunwind with the Gaudi history service to have more meaningful reports with Google profiling tools.

Marco Ca.: we need to coordinate the optimization efforts.
Sasha will call Marco Cl. for the next time the Hlt group will meet.

Marco Cl.

  • Submitted ROOT bug #87880, which is the cause of the segmentation fault when reading stripping data.
  • Prepared a new version of the Eclipse shared installation
    • regular updates
    • bugfixes in the custom plugins
    • added a couple of cheat sheets to test the possibility of replacing the TWiki-based tutorials with cheat sheets
  • Wrote a tool to simplify the bootstrap of VNC sessions on lxplus, working on Linux, Mac and Windows. Need to understand how to proceed with the packaging.

Marco Ca.

  • We need to build an old version of Moore with the new persistency. The easiest seems to be to build the old LHCb (v32r3) on the latest Gaudi (v22r4), but the 'pX' version extension should be reserved for regular patches and not mixed with this special release.
    • Agreed to extend the version scheme with an optional 'gX' after the 'pX'. Most of the tools should work out of the box, others will need patches. If the fixes are too problematic, we will use 'p224' to identify the special version.
  • Some experiment using Gaudi expressed interest in the new persistency service by Markus.
    • Marco Cl. will port the Online/RootSvc package to Gaudi, but the development will stay in LHCb, with the copy in Gaudi updated regularly.

  • Code to use Herwig++ in Gauss now available in SVN (after some clean up). It needs more improvements.
  • Some LCGCMT Interfaces for generators are broken, requiring a new release of LCGCMT to fix them.
    • We need a procedure to temporary distribute the fixed version with Gaudi (extension to getpack?).

  • Released LbScripts v6r5
    • removed the hack that replaced DIRAC with LHCbDIRAC on the fly
    • new implementation of the post-install hook and added the update hook needed by the new SQLDDDB/SQLite deployment model

  • Implemented the update hook to be used by the new install_project
  • Will produce SQLDDDB v7r0, maintaining v6rX in parallel for a while (as long as needed)

  • Managed to reproduce the problem we have in Gauss with the cross sections in Pythia8 using a stand-alone test.
    • discussion with experts ongoing

  • Investigating the possibility of introducing multi-threading in Brunel.

  • Problems in the LCG nightlies due to CVS.
