Accessing information via the Data Interchange Protocol (DIP)

The Data Interchange Protocol, DIP, is actually DIM in disguise. The only technical difficulty with DIP comes from the fact that much of the information is published on the protected Technical Network (TN) and thus not directly accessible for machines in the Online network.

Gateway for DIP

The DIP gateway machine is diptn01. You are not allowed to login to this machine and it is also not necessary. Because of the special nature of the Technical Network we have to apply strict security.

Procedure to access DIP information

  • Install the DIP component, fwDIP, in your PVSS project (it is part of the LHCb Framework)
  • Remove the PVSS00dip manager - it makes no sense to run it locally on your machine
  • Send a mail specifying your machine name, the port numbers of your event and your data manager to
  • We will add the PVSS00dip manager to diptn01, which will allow your project to access any DIP information, you require
  • Once you have been informed that your PVSS00dip is running, you can verify your access by using the DIP browser

Problems & FAQ

  • It doesn't work --- try a few of the hints here, than contact us
  • The info I require isn't showing up: Start the DIP browser (open panels/fwDIP/fwDip.pnl ) and verify that you can actually see information. You should be able to see at least the DSS information. If not please inform the admins
  • If just a few items are missing, which you would expect to see: try to find out the "provider" of the information, e.g. Laurent Roy for the DSS. She/he might need to publish the information

PVSS configuration on diptn01

This concerns only the admins

  • The project is called infdip, installed in /localdisk/pvss/infdip, system name is INFDIP and system number is 29
  • The project to be started is defined in /etc/pvss.conf
  • The framework Components are in /group/online/inf/pvss/fwComponents_infdip
  • The project is automatically started at boot-time from /etc/init.d/pvss under the ecs account. The modified startup script is here.
  • It can be manually controlled, by doing sudo /sbin/service/pvss <start|stop|status|restart>
  • Currently the event and data-managers are still running, even though this is not necessary
