Running Jobs Locally With DIRAC

This procedure describes how to run jobs locally with DIRAC. To follow the steps below you must be a registered DIRAC user with access to a correctly configured DIRAC installation. It is important to note that there can be conflicts in your environment, particularly relating to CMT since e.g. at CERN the release area and the Grid shared area are both visible on AFS. To combat the problem at CERN it is sufficient to unset the CMTPROJECTPATH variable.

DIRAC Modes Of Submission

Currently there are three principal modes of submission using the DIRAC API, each is explained below:

Default ( dirac.submit(job) )

By default all jobs are submitted to the WMS for execution on the Grid or other available resources.

Local ( dirac.submit(job,mode='local') )

The local submission mode corresponds to execution of the workflow without any interaction with the workload management system. This is useful for prototyping of new workflows or a quick test for users prior to job submission. The advantage of the Local submission mode is a very fast turnaround, since the Workload Management System is not involved, jobs are immediately executed on the local resource.

Agent ( dirac.submit(job,mode='agent') )

When jobs are executed on the Grid an agent (Job Agent) requests a task from the central Task Queue via the Matcher service of the Workload Management System. When a task is returned a Job Wrapper is dynamically created to execute the job, also with a Watchdog process to monitor resource usage. The Agent submission mode invokes the full DIRAC machinery locally to run the jobs in the same manner as on the Grid. In principle the Local mode can be used to prototype a workflow and the Agent mode can be employed as a final realistic test of a given production or user job. The advantage of this mode with respect to running jobs on the Grid is a faster turnaround between tests.

Typical API Scripts For Local Running Jobs

Jobs are defined using the DIRAC API and two examples of jobs that could be executed locally are given below.

Firstly this is a typical Gauss application script:

this will run Gauss v26r0 with the options specified by the file Gaussv26r0.opts in 'local' mode.

similarly this will run DaVinci v20r2 with the options file DaVinciv20r2.opts in 'agent' mode.

Please note that for the DaVinci job to work locally you must be at a site where data resides on a local Storage Element that is fully described in DIRAC3. To establish whether the site is eligible to run with input data you can get site CE / SE information via:

For example, since PIC has well defined Storage Elements in DIRAC it would be eligible to run a job with input data requirement locally. To check whether a given dataset is eligible for running at a local site it is possible to use the following script:

Using the 'Local' mode

The use of the Local mode involves specifying the following to the API submit command:

dirac.submit(job,mode='local')

The local mode is intended primarily for fast workflow testing over small numbers of events, all job outputs are generated in the current working directory and nothing is submitted to the workload management system, the workflow is executed locally.

A full example using Gauss is given below:

Using the 'Agent' mode

The use of the Agent mode involves specifying the following to the API submit command:

dirac.submit(job,mode='agent')

The agent mode allows full testing of a workflow using exactly the same DIRAC machinery as on a Grid Worker Node. In this mode of submission a job is submitted to the workload management system and monitored until it is eligible to be picked up. After this a job agent is started locally that requests the submitted job from the WMS and runs it. A directory is created in the current working directory to store all the job outputs.
