An oracle 10.2.0 client has been installed on the Online cluster and is available to all users/groups. The software is located in /sw/oracle/ . Platforms supported are linux (32 and 64 bits) and windows 32 bit.

Linux

To set up the environment on linux execute the /sw/oracle/linux/bin/oraenv or the /sw/oracle/linux64/bin/oraenv script, depending on what type of client you want. Using the 32 bit version on 64 bit machines is possible and might be required by the application used. Please be sure to check using the "file" linux tool the type of your executables. To set up the environment automatically the following lines can be added to your login script (.bash_profile for example):

proc=`uname -p`
if [ $proc == "x86_64" ]; then
    . /sw/oracle/linux64/bin/oraenv
else
    . /sw/oracle/linux/bin/oraenv
fi

The database names in the connect identifiers can be in either lowercase or uppercase letters. The sqlplus, exp, imp, expdp, impdp, and other oracle utilities are available. For database management/development a version of the Tora application is installed on linux (type tora to start it). To complement the usability of sqlplus an utility called rlwrap is installed together with its Oracle configurations files. This allows bash like behavior (command history, completion, reverse search, tab completion for tables/views, bash shortcuts, etc) for sqlplus. To use this features start sqlplus using the sql+ script. This will automatically invoke rlwrap with the appropriate parameters. Example:

[radu@gw01 ~]$ sql+ <test_user>/<test_password>@<db_name>
Please note that if you have an PVSS project that uses an Oracle Db as a backend you need to set up the environment before starting pvss.

After popular demand the environment includes also the cx_Oracle library (32 and 64 bit versions). Please note that the PYTHON_PATH variable is set now and this can be reset by tools like CMT.

Windows

To set up the environment execute the P:\oracle\win\32bin\oraenv script. To start PVSS with the correct Oracle environment the following .bat script can be used:
call P:\oracle\win32\bin\oraenv.bat
start /B C:\ETM\PVSS2\3.6\bin\PVSS00ui.exe +config config.pa -projAdmin
exit
The only application installed is sqlplus.

General

The existing databases are defined in the $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin/tnsnames.ora file. The access to databases installed on the CERN network is only possible on dual homed machines (the gateways for example).

It is possible to export a CERN database and import it in the Online cluster. If you are interested in this please see the Import/Export entry in the LHCb Online Twiki. You will need the necessary permissions for this.

If you have any problems please send an email to lhcb-online-admins@cernNOSPAMPLEASE.ch
