Eclipse is a modular platform. To simplify the management of LHCb projects and packages, several plugins are being developped.

This tutorial gives you an overview of how to setup your Eclipse installation with LHCb Plugins.

Warning, important As of may 2011, the plugins only works with a local installation of Eclipse.

Update Site

Every plugin in Eclipse is installed through an update site. It provides a way to automatically keep your plugins up to date.

The LCHB Plugins update site is located here:

Setting the Update Site in Eclipse.

First, run your eclipse installation.

This is done by running your local eclipse from the command line.

cd to your eclipse directory and run $ ./eclipse. (mind the ./ which forces your system to run your local eclipse and not the shared one.)

Once the main view appears, go to Help > Install New Software....

Install New Software

In the Install window, click on the Add... button, near the top.

Add Update Site

Eclipse prompts you an Add Repository dialog.

Set the Name to something meaningful such as LHCb Plugins. The Location is the one specified above:

Add Repository

Now eclipse should refresh the window and display a _CERN LHCb_. Check it, and hit Next.

Add Update Site

Keep hitting Next on the following screens. Select I accept the terms of the license agreements when asked and press Finish.

The installation shows a Security Warning because of unsigned content. The plugins are still in development and therefore aren't signed. It's okay to press Ok smile

After the udpate is complete, Eclipse asks you whether it should restart or not. Click on Restart Now and wait for Eclipse to restart itself.

Congratulations! The LHCb plugins are now installed.

Using GetPack Wizard

Warning, important As of 2011/05/09, it requires the trunk version of getpack.

Warning, important As of 2011/05/09, the UI does not refresh correctly and may appear blocked. This is a known bug :)

One of the plugins enables you to run getpack directly from eclipse.

To do so, right click on a project, and select Import.

In the dialog box appearing, look for an LHCb folder. Then select GetPack Wizard inside it.

GetPack Wizard

Double click on it or hit Next.

The Wizard now asks getpack to generate the list of available packages. Please be patient, it may take some time.

Now it should display the list of available projects (top items, with a blueish icon). If you unfold one of them, you will see the hats (yellow hat icon) and packages (cardbox icon).

Select Packages

Check the packages, or hats or projects you want and press Next.

Now the system queries getpack for the available versions. Again, this operation takes time smile

On the next screen, select the version you wish for every package. You can even enter your own (if you know what you're doing!). The version most suitable for your project is selected by default.

Select Packages Versions

Hit Finish and wait for the Wizard to download the packages for you.

The downloaded packages should appear in the Navigator on the left.
