8th to 10th January 2007 at Edinburgh - UK National-eScience Centre (NeSC)
Announcement, general information, on-line-registration and important dates are found here.
Main programme
Presentations and practical sessions take place at NeSC. The agenda is found
here
.
Requisites
Participants need to have a valid Grid certificate and be registered with the LHCb virtual organisation (V0). Information on obtaining and registering a certificate can be found at:
Participants also need an LHCb account on the CERN LXPLUS machines. You're usually given an account automatically when you register as an
LHCb user. If you don't have an account, or haven't registered, you should contact the LHCb secretariat (
lhcb-secretariat@cernNOSPAMPLEASE.ch), who will be happy to assist you.
Pre-course exercises
Some warmup exercises before the start:
- 1) Essential: Make sure that you have an LHCb account on LXPLUS.
- 2) Essential: Obtain a Grid certificate and register with the LHCb virtual organisation (V0).
- 3) Make sure you're familiar with AFS
, basic Linux shell commands and file editing. Most people in LHCb use tcsh
(shell) and emacs
(editor). You're free to choose something different, but this tends to mean that you'll have less support in case of problems.
- 4) Gain some familiarity with C++
. You might find useful the BaBar C++ course
(follow links to pdf files).
- 5) Learn a little Python
. Python is used in a number of areas in LHCb, and you'll find it useful to have at least worked through the first three sections of the Python tutorial
.
- 6) Register to CERN TWikiSite: registration
Documentation
Previous courses have excellent material.
Material for the course
It is very slow to use Emacs in graphical mode from CERN. Instead, please try using Emacs in
text mode:
[lxplus001] % emacs -nw myfile.cpp
Some of the common control keys used in emacs are:
- Control + C: quit
- Control + S: save
- Control + W: save as
- Control + F: open file
- Control + K: close buffer
- Control + Shift + '-' : undo action
- Control + X + 1: make one window
- Control + X + 2: split window in two (horizontal)
- Control + X + 3: split window in two (vertical)
- Control + X + O (not 0): switch to next window
- Control + X + B: switch to next buffer
