LHCb Production Operations

This is the LHCb Production Operations page which contains documents regarding the duties of Grid Experts and Grid Shifters in the context of the Grid Team. The proposed daily timetable for Grid Shifters and experts is shown below:

Since when we started to have real data, there are 2 computing shifters a day, covering in total 14 hours a day. The general feeling is the shifter has been extremely useful in giving feedback to the developers in ensuring the system is non-expert friendly.

Grid Duties

The last production duty tutorial is available here with the only change being that the current DIRAC3 installation has moved to a new location (to be announced after release). The updated Grid Duties checklist is available here. The latest on-duty list can be found in the Shift database here

Grid Duty Guide

The first draft of the production duty guide can be found here (PDF) or in HTML at this link.

Stable production operation procedures will be migrated to the guide regularly. People on duty are encouraged to contribute to the guide if they discover any omissions. Contributions should be made through CVS and follow the style and command structure already present in the guide. To build the document first ensure you have CVS privileges to the following directory (contact Joel, Andrei or Stuart for this):

<DIRAC CVS ROOT>/Documentation/GridShifterGuide
or browse the document root from the DIRAC CVS Browser. Inside this directory is a script to build the PDF of the document in a normal latex installation (make.sh).

Grid Experts

The first draft of the Grid Expert checklist is available here. A longer description of the Grid Expert role is under preparation. As a Grid Expert the main tools to use for reporting problems are:

Grid Experts are also responsible for defining Production Operations Procedures for other Grid Experts and Shifters to follow. A longer description of the Grid Expert role is also available here.

The grid expert on call can be found in the Shift database here

WLCG operations reports

Production Status Machine

A description of the various states a production can be in and the components controlling each transition can be found at the following link: Production Status Machine.

Production Manager

Description of several steps in the creation of a production

Feature Requests

Feature requests from Shifters and Experts should go to the DIRAC Savannah project page.

The procedure for submitting feature requests and bug reports can be found here.

Ongoing Activities

Automating procedures to ensure all files are processed for a given reconstruction or stripping production

As discussed in the PASTE meeting of 14th October 2008 (minutes) the processing of all available files for a given production is achievable but currently requires human (expert) interventions. The following page describes the current understanding of how to get to 100% processing efficiency.
