The SciFi tracker consists of 6 pairs of C-frames, mounted symmetrically left and right of the beam pipe. They are the backbone of the detector, carry the fibre modules and route all services to and from them. Prior to lowering and installing the detector to the underground area, the 12 C-frames will be assembled, dressed and tested in the new surface hall 3852 at point 8. The assembly and testing of the C-frames is a complex process which requires the co-ordinated work of many people and the availability of all relevant services and infrastructure. Roles and responsibilities

In view of the complex assembly and testing work, numerous persons from the SciFi team need to cooperate in a coordinated way. The sharing of responsibilities for the various services and tasks has been discussed and agreed among the institutes. The table below shows the current matrix. For every task we have identified 2 responsibles, which shall be supported by other manpower from the involved institutes, incl. technicians. Even if not explicitly mentioned, students can contribute to most of the tasks. Given the overhead (safety, access) and the time needed for introduction and training, stays of 1 month are the absolute minimum.

Description of tasks

Module / Cold Box pre-assembly

Modules built before Nov. 2017 aren't gas tight and require rework at CERN, followed by a gas tightness test. Details of the procedures and sequence still to be finalised. Subsequently the two cold box shells are mounted and the inner piece with the pre-mounted SiPM arrays inserted. This is followed by another test of the gas tightness. Then the module is connected to a USB SPIROC readout system. The task organises its own low voltage and high voltage (SiPM bias). Using light from the LI system, the following functionality can be verified: all SiPM channels working, optical contact to fibre ends, light tightness. All the work is foreseen to take place in the RICH clean box.

Cables / Com Fibres

We foresee to attach the cables and potentially also the communication fibres to the 3 beams forming a C-frame. This pre-dressing step could take place on work benches on which the I-beams are placed. Once the I-beams are assembled to C-frames (which is not part of this task; see below), the cabling needs to be finalised and the electrical and optical continuity tested. The work takes place in B3852. (What about movable cable ducts?)

Novec Pipework

The task consists in mounting the Novec piping on the C-frame, connect it to the manifold and perform tightness tests. It is assumed that the distribution lines will only be mounted during the installation in the cavern.

C-Frame Mechanics

The task comprises the pre-assembly of the I-beams, manifolds, carriages etc. and their assembly to C-frames. This work will take place in B3852 using the ATIS frames. The first one or two C-frames may undergo geometrical survey to verify orthogonality and parallelism of beams. This will involve the CERN survey team.

Low Voltage

The tasks consists in providing and testing the LV supply for FEE, from the Maraton power supply via the cables and patch panels to the FE cards of one full C-frame at a time. The required Slow control (based on WinCC) needs to be developed. WinCC support will be provided by CERN. The system has to be built up in B3852.

High Voltage

The tasks consists in providing and testing the HV (SiPM bias) supply via the cables and patch panels to the FE cards of one full C-frame at a time. The required Slow control (based on WinCC) needs to be developed. The system has to be built up in B3852. Links to task "Cables / Pipes / Com fibres".

Novec plant

CERN (EN/CV group) is building a baby demo cooling plant with a net power of 1 kW to be installed in B3852. The task consists in operating this plant and carrying out the emptying and filling of the Novec liquid from/into the C-frames. The plant is equipped with a basic PCB-based control system. Recording of data needs to be implemented.

Insulation vacuum

The distribution lines (2 feeds + 2 returns) between the baby demo cooling plant and the C-frame as well as the Novec manifolds are vacuum insulated. The tasks consists in providing a vacuum system to ensure the permanent presence of a sufficiently good vacuum. Currently we assume a max. pressure in the 10^-4 mbar range. The question of the vacuum sensors (Pirani?) needs to be addresses because of radiation issues. The system, incl. controls, will be provided by a team from CERN EP/DT (X. Pons)

Dry gas system

The cold boxes are flushed by dry gas (air) with a dew point well below -50 C. A system is foreseen which supplies in a parallel configuration every cold box with a flow of up to 1 l/min. The system shall also include analysis of the return gas for traces of humidity. Ideally every return line from a cold box could be sampled individually. The system, incl. controls, will be provided by a team from CERN EP/DT (R. Guida)

Water Cooling

The tasks comprises the mounting of the cooling blocks and tubes (partly on the I-beams before C-frame assembly?), followed by a tightness test under pressure. For the test of up to 1 full C-frame at a time, the heat shall be evacuated by the mixed water available in B3852 or by a small lab chiller. Extra temperature probes may be needed as electronic cards are not yet mounted at this stage? To be discussed and decided.


As mentioned above, the C-frame geometry and the placement / bending of the modules shall be verified on the first C-frames and can be stopped in case satisfactory results are obtained. The task consists in coordinating the activity of the CERN survey team in scheduling, taking, analysis and interpreting the data.

FE electronics

The tasks comprises the mounting of the FE electronics on the cold frames, their connection, configuration, operation, testing and trouble shooting. The latter two tasks are performed in tight collaboration wit the DAQ team.


The DAQ task comprises the setting up, testing, and operational support of a miniDAQ2 system (for repair and re-testing work) and 1 full DAQ system for 1 full C-frame at a time.

System Commissioning

The full C-frames undergo final decisive tests. The task comprises the execution of these tests and, in cooperation with the various experts, their analysis and the implementation of the required repairs and replacements. This will require the development of various software tools to reliably and efficiently identify problems.

SiPM support

The tasks ensures the availability of expertise for the operation and testing of SiPM, such that encountered problems can be followed up efficiently. It includes also the provision of the operational parameters of the SiPMs.

Light Injection support

Like for SiPMs, the task ensures the availability of expertise for the operation and testing of Light Injection system, such that encountered problems can be followed up efficiently.

WinCC support

Several sub-systems will be controlled via WinCC. The tasks consists in setting up, in close collaboration with the CERN online team, the infrastructure and software for the control tasks and to provide support to the sub-systems (configuration).

Configuration Database

We think of a database (several databases) which contains all relevant configuration parameters of the SiPMs, Pacific chips, Light injection systems (?). The database shall allow to feed the WinCC based controls for HV and FEE slow control.

Overall Coordination

The coordinator takes care of scheduling and monitoring the activities at point 8, interfaces to the handling team, and the other detector teams in the hall (UT and VELO).
