Current main activities

Production: The production of 1300 2.5m long, 13cm wide, 6-layer fibre mats requires 4 institutes with winding machines producing 4 mats per week. Currently, these winding facilities are being brought into operation such that the Production Readiness reviews can begin in March 2016.

The tooling to build and handle the module is being improved following the Engineering Design Review in July of 2015. Additional modules will be built using the newest production drawings.

Research: Production problems related to bumps of an unacceptable diameter require new techniques to wind a mat that is bump free or undesturbed by these bumps. A mat of wider pitch but more layer was produced as one solution. Another solution which cuts out the bump and splices the 0.25mm fibre back together is also being investigated.

  • The number of bumps per layer will increase the production time of each mat past the 8-hour limit.

Next milestones and reviews

  1. Engineering Meeting to finalize production concepts / decision casting (Thu 15.10.15) Presentation and discussion of this document. Decisions regarding foil or glue casting will be made, as well as other small modifications to the endpiece design.
  2. Order winding wheels (Thu 15.10.15) Every winding center requires three wheels (Six in Russia). Currently an offer from BOMA is being investigated by Dortmund.
  3. Order casting tools (Sun 15.11.15) Glue casting requires 4 jigs per site (8 in Russia).
  4. Order fibres (Sun 15.11.15) 100 km of fibre will be ordered and distributed to the initial winding sites for machine development.
  5. Approve pre‐series (5%) (Mon 15.02.16) 500km of fibre will be ordered and measured to confirm large batch quality.
  6. 50% fibres delivered Thu 15.09.16 Half of the ordered fibres from Kuraray should have arrived at CERN.
  7. Decide on order of NOL fibres (3000 km) Thu 15.12.16 If the NOL fibre provide superior performance to the standard fibres.
  8. Decide on use of 3000 km option Wed 15.02.17 Option in the contract to order fibre beyond what was foreseen to be required.
  9. *100% fibres delivered (11'000 km) Mon 15.05.17 All 11,000km of fibre has been delivered per the supplier contract to CERN.
  10. Start fibre mat production Fri 15.01.16 First winding centre begins production of fibre mats at a reduced pace.
  11. *PRR fibre‐mats Tue 15.03.16 Review of production centres currently in production, schedules and costs.
  12. 10% fibre mats produced Sun 15.05.16
  13. 50% fibre mats produced Thu 15.12.16
  14. *100% fibre mats produced Sat 15.07.17
