Work package: Fibre Procurement and QA

WP leader:


The work package deals with the specification, procurement and characterisation of the scintillating fibres. During the series production, the WP will ensure the reception, qualification and redistribution of the fibres to the mat production centres. The total length of the fibres exceeds 10,000 km.

Current main activities

  • Fibre R&D: optimisation of light yield, geometrical parameters, consolidation of radiation hardness
  • Preparation of QA set-ups and procedures


  • Bump size and frequency impacting fibre yield (i.e. cost) and/or production time (manpower)
  • The attenuation length of recent batches is <= 3 m. We aim for >3.5 m.
  • The insufficient knowledge of the radiation hardness of fibres at low doses results in some uncertainty of the light yield.
  • We need to define and qualify a rapid-feedback radation test for series production QA
