SciFi Tracker Test Beam 2014

Aim of the test beam

  • Measure light yield and attenuation length of 2.5 m long, 13. cm wide fibre mats.
  • Read out with new Hamamatsu and Ketek devices.
  • Resolution.
  • Hit efficiency with 5 and 6 layer fibre mats. [optional]

Devices to test

  • 2 x 7 cm x 3 m modules from Aachen
  • 1 x 13 cm x 2.5 m module from Heidelberg
  • 1 x 13 cm x 1 m module from Heidelberg (removed 09/10 at 14.50)
  • 1 x 13 cm x 2.5 m 6 layer coverlay mat from CERN

Read-out

  • EPFL:
    new hamamatsu devices mounted on flex. in production
    new ketek devices mounted on flex status unknown
  • Aachen:
    old hamamatsu devices on 128 channel hybrid.
  • Data acquisition: usbBoard, SPIROC, VATA.
Guido will send the completed EPFL electronics to Roman.

Telescope

To be provided by Aachen. There is a comprehensive description of the proposed set up available in Roman Greim's presentation at the test beam kick-off meeting .

Linear table and mechanics

  1. Simple mechanical tables on rails, non-motorised. Allows for transverse displacement of arbitrary length. Rails to be mounted on concrete blocks. Tables can also be adjusted in height. Simple construction with limited precision. Contact person: Michael Jaeckel.
  2. So-called DESY tables. Allow for vertical and horizontal displacement by +/- 0.5 m. Motorised and remote-controlled. 1 table available for H8. Contact person: Michael Jaeckel.
  3. A 5 m long, relatively heavy, motorised rail with additional (optional) small xy-movement system. Could be easily shortened to 2.5 or 3 m. Rail is in PH storage and wasn't used for a long 3me. Status unknown. Would require some effort to make it operational, but could be a good longer term investment. Contact person Raphael Dumps.
  4. A 2 m long, less heavy, motorised rail. Contact person Iouri Guz.

The "Rolls Royce" solution is option 3.

Milestones

  • Order panels. done
  • Pray they arrive and can be made into modules.
  • Send packaged detectors from EPFL to Aachen. End of first week of September
  • Ship all equipment to CERN. Last week of September

Measurement plan

  1. Time alignment of telescope+DUTs to the beam (~ 1--2 days).
  2. Attenuation length scan 12(24) points, (10)5k+ events each in (20)10 cm steps along Y. Time: (4)8 hours
  3. Resolution: 500k+ events at 6 points along 40cm steps in Y. Time: 8 hours
  4. Vertical Scan: 500k events at 5 points along X in 2cm steps: Time: 7 hours
  5. (2nd week of test beam) Bias Voltage Scan: 500k events at 1 point, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5, 5.0 Volts over breakdown. Time: 8 hours

Backing up the data to EOS

More information on EOS can be found on https://cern.service-now.com/service-portal/article.do?n=KB0001998 and http://eos.cern.ch/

XROOTD must be installed on a local machine with OPENSSL and KERBEROS5 to move it there from EOS.

1. Copy the files from the server to the client machine (to /home/scifi_testbeam14/backup/testbeam_data/).

2. Open a terminal on the "scifionline" client machine. In the /backup/testbeam_data directory on the client where the files have been copied:

$ ls *.root > filelist.txt
$ xrootd -c xrootconfig.cfg # this starts the xroot server daemon. ctrl-c after to close it or add & to put in background.

3. Open a terminal on lxplus.cern.ch:

$ eos ls -l /eos/lhcb/testbeam/scifi                    #lhcb-scifi-tracker-testbeam has write permission, lhcb has read
$ xrdcp root://scifionline.cern.ch//home/scifi_testbeam14/backup/testbeam_data/filelist.txt filelist.txt

4. On lxplus, create the following bash script 'script_xrdcpfilelist.sh':

5. Then run it there:

$ ./script_xrdcpfilelist.sh filelist.txt # it will not transfer or overwrite pre-existing files
$ eos ls -l /eos/lhcb/testbeam/scifi
