VELO Power On Procedure

This procedure is intended to provide a comprehensive list of the different steps to be followed when switching on the VELO. However, for the detailed instructions please follow the given links.

  1. Start PVSS project of the vacuum and cooling system (instrcutions to be provided).
  2. Start cooling system.
  3. Switch on LV system by turning the key of the mainframe from "off" to "local".
  4. HV system is automatically switched on as soon as the rack has power???
  5. Switch on crates of Control and Temperature Board (instructions)
In case of switching on the VELO please check that the current consumption of the two crates is identical by comparing the currents of channels U0-U3 to the ones of U6-U9 of the WIENER USB Power Supply Control.
  6. Switch on TELL1 crates by flipping the red switch of the fan units in D3E04 top, D3E03 top, D3E03 bottom, D3E02 top and D3E02 bottom for the VELO and D3E01 top for the Pile-Up System.
Use the "Mode Select" switch of the fan unit to change to the mode "Power". Check that the power consumption of each crate agrees with the values given in the table below.
  7. Start the other PVSS projects (find the complete list of PVSS projects here).
  8. Start the ECS:
    • start DCS (in case of a power cut, please don't forget to include the Service Power Supply back as explained here)
    • start DAQ
    • start HV
    • start the main ECS control
  9. If the crates for Control and Temperature boards have been off, the Temperature Boards send an interlock signal. Therefore the interlock has to be reseted (instructions).
Please be not misled by the fact that the circle indicating the interlock status is green. The Temperature Boards come up in the state "OPERATIONAL", i.e. the register contents of the Temperature Board cannot be read, i.e. it cannot be indicated that there is an interlock.
  10. Starting operating the VELO.

Nominal Power Consumption of the TELL1 crates

Crate System Nominal Power Consumption
D3E04U VELO 720 W
D3E03U VELO 760 W
D3E03L VELO 750 W
D3E02U VELO 760 W
D3E02L VELO 755 W
D3E01U Pile-Up ??? W

The number for the Pile-Up is not yet defined since a VELO spare TELL1 still sits in the crate.
