How to work with the FLIR Thermal Camera software

With the FLIR Thermal Camera (TC) images can be taken which will be stored on the camera itself. After removing the pictures from the camera with Thermacam Quickview, these pictures need to be transformed into Matlab readable files by Thermalcam Researcher. This short manual will explain how to make and quickly analyze the pictures.


Updated soon with setup drawing. Camera mark (on red in setup) should be positioned 31cm horizontally from the module position. Green mark has been made at the location for the chosen module position.


Powering on the camera*

The top of the camera has 4 buttons and one 4-way button. Press the button most to the right for 2 seconds to power up the camera. You will hear the clicking sound of the shutter. Also remember to remove the cap from the lens. Make sure the power cable and usb cable are connected. If the camera runs on batteries, this will produce more heat and distort the picture.[To power off: press start button for 5 sec]

Opening Thermacam Quickview software*

On the Velo Cooling system computer, all software has been installed. Under normal circumstances Quickview will start when the camera was powered up. If this is not the case goto 'All Programs' then 'ThermalCam Quickview' and start program. Press on the camera logo in the left window

There are two ways to collect images:

  • Manual operation (easiest) Goto the ‘Image’ tab then ‘Capture Image’. If necessary press F5 to refresh the screen. You can see one or more thumbnails of the pictures which were taken.

  • Automatic operation (good for many pictures) In the folder 'c:\Sathpict\AutoItV3', there is a file called : MyMonkey-ModuleAnalyse.au3; Maximize the thermacam Quickview window and press the .exe file. This program will take 15 pictures, one every 30 seconds. Do not work with the computer while running this script! [note : you can alter the script withAutoIT-Software. e.g. : Change no of pics (now 15) to be taken in the script if necessary
    • (Line 25: “for $j = 1 To 15 Step 1”) ]
For analysis purposes , one picture must be taken at the moment of starting up the camera (time reference image).

Copying files from camera to folder

After finishing the measurements, the images are automatically transferred to the local drive folder ( c:\Sathpict\’date of measurements’\). If this is not the case : you have to transfer the images to the local computer. Goto ‘File’ then ‘Transfer Images’ And select the folder for the images to be saved with ‘Move all pictures’)

Saving files to Matlab format

After moving all the pictures, open ‘ThermaCam Researcher’ software (via all programs) and go to ‘Image’ then ‘Image directory’ and select the directory containting all the pictures. Then go to ‘Image’ tab, click ‘Open’ and ADD all pictures  press OK. All pictures are now loaded into the main screen. Then go to ‘Image’ > ‘Settings’ > ‘Object parameters’ and set the distance to 0.3m (calibration is done by matlab). This has the effect that the air transmission value is set to 1.0. Make also sure that the emissivity and the transmission for an external optics is set to 1.0 which corresponds to no corrections at all (black body radiation). This corrections will be made in the program SathPict. On the third row of buttons, the third from the right you can now lock these object parameters, so that this will hold for all pictures that are analyzed. Run over all pictures by using the play button to see the results for every picture. To save to matlab files (.mat) you now press ‘Recording’ > ‘copy selection’ With output name ‘same as source’ and output format as ‘Matlab’ > press OK. All pictures are now stored in matlab format and can be opened with matlab Sathpict software to be analyzed.

Analyzing with SAthpict

To show the pictures
Open Matlab and type : ‘cd c:\SAthPict\’ and press enter. Start the program by typing 'SathPict'.This will open a window needed for the analysis. First you have to load a session or start a new session which fits the experiments you have been doing. You can load an existing session or start your own, e.q ‘ 7julDifferentCoolTemp ’ (this file is present in the SAthPict folder). To see the pictures go to the tab ‘Show pictures’. When you opened the above session, the folder name and start pictures are already preset. Otherwise type the folder name and start picture in the filename box (e.q. 05.06.07/IR_1234.mat) and the number of pictures to be analyzed. Make sure that the object parameters are set to the values correponding to your measurement setup as for example (1,22,1,21,0.68,22), where 0.68 is the transmission of the window. If the emissivity was defined in the ‘define area’ tab, the value in this textbox will be ignored. Important are the reflection and the external optic temperatures which should be set to the correct values (for example start temperature of the NTC’s on the module which should be close to roomtemperature). In the bottom left a box is visible with choosen files. Double click on one of them to see the picture. On the right, the box ‘Show all areas’ will show the choosen analysis areas in the picture (these can be set in the ‘define area’ tab).

To analyze the pictures
Load a session as explained above, but now press the ‘*analyze pictures*’ tab. Check that the settings match the experimental conditions. Press the tab ‘Go for it’ to analyze all pictures on the selected areas (can be defined in the ‘*define area*’ tab). The found temperatures will then be shown in a plot (temperature as function of time if not chosen otherwise).

Exporting data
Check ‘*log values*’ in the ‘*analyze pictures*’ tab. This will store all the data (data points, errors, names, areas etc) depending on the Sathpict settings into the C:\Sathpict\log\Plotvalues.mat
