Operating the VELO User Panel

The VELO User panel is a simple panel which collects links to useful monitoring tools. Since the top panel has changed on August 13, 2008 there is a new procedure to bring it up. Go to the folder group/online/ecs/NewShortcuts/VELO Then select VEECS1_UI_ECS_Domain_User and click the Open button. A panel as shown below should pop up.

As shown in the above picture, it contains three frames:

3D viewer

Four 3D viewers are available:

  • DCS: It displays in a 3D view the status of the VELO DCS
  • HV: It displays in a 3D view the status of the VELO HV
  • DAQ: It displays in a 3D view the status of the VELO DAQ
  • ECS: It displays in a 3D view the global status of the VELO

The operation of each viewer is similar. As example, the ECS 3D viewer is described in the following.

  • Initialization: once launched, the panel connects all the VELO Device Units: the initialization takes several minutes because of the large number of datapoints to be connected (>500).

  • Status: once the initialization is over, the 3D object representing the VELO is displayed: it consits of 42 half-disks (21 for the A side modules and 21 for the C side modules) displaced along the Beam Pipe (in grey). The status of each disk (i.e. each Velo Module) is given by its colour (green,blue,yellow or red) accordingly with the FSM conventions. Of course, being the VELO ECS the combination of 3 different domains, the color is defined as the lowest common denominator: for example, if the DCS, the HV and the DAQ are all READY (i.e. green, green and blue), the ECS colour will be blue. The colour of each module is automatically updated every time the the state of a Device Unit changes.

  • Rotation: from the vertical list of tools select the white hand: this tool allows you to left-click on the VELO and rotate it to change the point of view.

  • Selection: by selecting the red arrow, you can click on one Velo Module and get all the informations related to it. These informations are displayed in several fields on the right of the panel. All fields can be clicked to get more details.

  • Control: the panel also allows to power on/off a single module or a combination of modules. Choose whether you want to include the HV and click on SEND; the following panel will pop up:

The selected module will be automatically selected in the above panel: you can anyway change the selection as you like. Click on Confirm to power on/off the selected modules. All the actions taken will be displayed in the Log window: you can edit it by clicking on the editable button and save it to a file by clicking on savetofile (filename and location are defined automatically). Click on Cancel to close the panel.

Summary panel

A summary panel showing the status of the Velo is available by clicking on Summary:

Tools

By clicking on exclude/include all children you get the following panel, where you can enter the name of a Control Unit or a Device Unit and include/exclude all its children.
