Printing in LHCb Control Room:

The HP black & white printer is available for installation on all XP consoles in LHCb control room.
You can connect to it via :
or by using the "Add Printer Wizzard" and choosing:

  • Network Printer
  • Find printer in Directory
  • Click on "Find Now" and then choose "HP-CtrlRoom"

For all users without a Roaming Profile ( the whole first users ... ), it is necessary to install the printer on each XP consoles the first time you need it. You can of course ask to have your profile moved to Roaming by sending a mail to the Admins:

Running DIM DNS and Specs Server as Windows services:

Dim DNS and Specs server can now be installed/run as Windows service, and then auto started on boot. The installation is made in :

C:\Program Files\CERN\DIM or \SpecsSrv

A log files should receive output information: L:\logs\dns.log and L:\logs\SpecsServer.log. The current config is to erase the file each time the service is restarted, but it can be kept if required. In this case a logrotate mechanism should be implemented.

Testing continue with Calo specs PCs, and one test PC is configued to rotate Specs Server logs ( could be huge ...): hcdaqhvc01w

Removing "Open File - Security Warning" prompt when running files from network drives:

When executables files are opened from network drives G:\group, P:\sw and S:\scratch, you get a popup window like this:

* Open File - Security Warning:

This was caused by a mapping with fully qualified name to, then Windows consider the file coming from Internet and prompt this Security Warning message.

The mapping is now made without domain name, but as mapping information are stored into user profile, an update of the profile has to be done. For this a script is avalaible to remove old mapping from user profile. To get rid of this Security prompt: 1- Log to any Online PC

2- Run the script P:\windows\FixLHCbMaps.bat (It will remove incorrect mappings)

3- Logoff to update your roaming profile stored on the network

4- Login again and check that now your network maps no longer include

If you don't have a roaming profile, you have to run the script on each PC, then logoff and login again to receive new correct mappings. Anyway it should be good to request the activation of your roaming profile, so please send a mail to

To check if you roaming profile is activated, right click on "My Computer", then select "Properties", "Advanced","User Profiles"
