CMS_FLUKA_Phase2_new.PNG |
The CMS FLUKA geometry model used in these simulations represents a phase II upgrade configuration. It includes a representation of the detector configuration as described in the Phase II Technical Proposal with the HGCal option, described in full in [CERN-LHCC-2015-010, p.377-382]. The end-cap calorimeters are represented with a preliminary model of the High Granularity Calorimeter (HGC) and the HE rebuild (covering up to 3 in the pseudorapidity range). The image shows a zoom into one-quarter of the CMS detector where the end-cap calorimeters and the existing muon chambers (DTs, RPCs, CSCs) can be identified. The Phase-2 upgrade muon system detectors were included (ME0, GE1/1, GE2/1, RE3/1, RE4/1) with the best knowledge on the dimensions and materials up-to-date. However, this model has been modified to include a representation the latest beampipe upgrade design (CERN integration office design v5.4.1, with default beryllium length of 1.9m), and represent a TAS diameter of 60 mm. Thus the representation of the beampipe in this phase II model includes a cylindrical beryllium section from Z = 0 cm to Z = 1.9m from the IP where it transitions to Aluminum until bellows at Z~3m. The 'endcap' beampipe section is represented as an aluminum conical section at eta = 5.661 from Z ~ 3.5 m until Z ~ 14m. |

RE31_hit_rate.png |
Estimated Background Hit Rate extracted with a combination of FLUKA and GEANT4 simulations. A CMS Phase II FLUKA Study, v3.7.7.0, is used to estimated the background particle flux arriving at the upgrade RE3/1 station resulting from proton-proton collisions at 7 TeV per beam. Results are normalized for an instantaneous luminosity of 5x10E34 cm-2s-1 assuming an inelastic scattering cross section of 80 mb. GEANT 4 is used to simulate the probability for each background particle to generate a signal (sensitivity). Thus the plot shows the contribution of the different neutron induced background particles (neutrons, photons, e+e-) weighted according to detector sensitivity and the total contribution. |

A CMS Phase I FLUKA Study v3.0.0.0 is used to estimated the background particle flux arriving at the RE4/2+RE4/3 stations resulting from proton-proton collisions at 6.5 TeV per beam. Results are normalized for an instantaneous luminosity of 1x10E34 cm-2s-1 assuming an inelastic scattering cross section of 80 mb. GEANT 4 is used to simulate the probability for each background particle to generate a signal (sensitivity). Thus the plot shows the contribution of the different neutron induced background particles (neutrons, photons, e+e-) weighted according to detector sensitivity, the total contribution from simulation and the experimental measurements collected during 2016 corresponding to a luminosity of ~1x10E34 cm-2s-1. |
