TEST BEAM ACTIVITY @FNALOct 2013

-- VallaryBhopatkar - 11 Apr 2014

FLYSUB consortium (Florida Tech, Yale University, Stony Brook University, Univ. of Virginia, and Brookhaven National lab) performed beam test at FNAL in Oct 2013. Beam test was conducted at MT6 station in meson test beam area. There were 19 detectors had been tested in this beam. Florida Tech and Univ. of Virginia were using same station for testing 10 different GEM detectors. The details are as follows:

Florida Tech: 1 (10cm x 10cm) GEM detectors (as a Tracker), 1 (1m long) CMS large area prototype III GEM detector, 1 (30cm x 30cm) GEM detector with ZigZag readout, 2 (10cm x 10cm) GEM detectors with Zigzag readout.

Univ. of Virginia: 2 (10cm x 10cm) GEM detectors (as Tracker), 1 ( 50cm x 50cm) GEM detector (as a Tracker), 1 ( 50cm x 50cm) GEM detector, 1 (1m long) GEM detector with (UV readout)

All trackers had 2D readout board with internal gap configuration 3/2/2/2mm

CMS GEM had internal gap configuration 3/1/2/1 mm

Gas mixture used in all detectors: Ar/CO2 70:30

Beam Energy used 120GeV Proton beam, 35GeV Mixed hadron beam (CMS Measurements)

We used DATE (DAQ from Alice) to take data with RD51 SRS system through APV 25 hybrid chip and data analyzed by AMORE package(FL Tech version).

Beam test schedule (Oct2- Oct22)

Sep 27 - Sep 29 Detectors were tested before installing in the beam line

Sep 29 - Oct 1 Detectors installation in beam line as well as all electronics setup

Oct 2 - Oct 22 Beam test

Oct 8 Patrizia arrived at Fermilab to join FL Tech group in beam test efforts

Oct 10 – Oct 22 CMS detector was tested in beam

All pedestal files were taken at 2000V for all detectors and each file contained 5K events.

During data taking all trackers were set at 4000V

CMS GEM detector measurements:

  1. High Voltage Scan: Voltage range 2900V – 3350V

    Each file has 15K

  2. Position Scan: Operating Voltage 3320V

Data was taken at three different APV position

    1. Upper APV 2. Middle APV 3. Lower APV

    Each file contains 15K events

  3. High Statistic Data: Operating Voltage 3320V

Four Data files, each with 100k events. Last run was not finished due to the beam loss

(Note: Run 2-3 have most uncorrelated events, we are still exploring the data)

  • Check gas: Ar/CO2 (70:30) has 1800psig, Ar/CO2 (80:20) has 1800psig
  • Gas flowing rate ~25 unit (from flow meter)
  • Apply voltages to all detectors, wait for the beam
  • detectors seem all in good condition
11/10/2013 5:45 pm
  • Beam is back, 32GeV mixture hadrons, rate ~460 counts/spill, not as stable as expected
  • Take new run 001 Pedestal (5k Events)
  • Rate from DATE is 2000 events/spill
  • Time window=9
  • HV setting as below
Detectors HV
Tracker 2 (Uva 10cm) 1800
Tracker 3 (Uva 10cm) 1800
SBS1 (Uva 50cm) 1800
Solid/EIC (Uva 1m) 1800
CMS/EIC zz (FIT) 1600
S4 (FIT 30cm) 2000
