Alan's Notes

Here I put what I don't want to forget.

Accessing the Grid

I used Starting on the Grid in the Work book. But things aren't that simple, I will put more here later.

Reseting the administrator password in MS Windows

For when everyone in your group forgets the adminstrator password for a Windows machine that you now want to use there is EBCD. It has many other tools as well. Of course you might be so unlucky as to discover that someone has yanked out the tray in the CD drive, leaving rubber belts hanging from the gaping hole. In this case you need a floppy drive solution, which you can find at the ntpasswd site. Another possibility is to try resetting with the install disks.

I discovered, though, that once the password is reset it may not be easy to set a new one. It turns out that the local machine Administrator account doesn't have to be in the Administrators group which controls the rights to change passwords. So, in my case I am stuck with leaving the password blank (not a good idea on a networked computer.)
