How to configure a CERN printer

Scientific Linux (4,5)

I successfully configure the printer near by our office (512-1-009) in SL5 using CUPS.

  • First you need to gather the printer name (something like 512-1002-HP) and the printer type (HP Laserjet 3005x)
  • You can consult information on the printer at this page: Printer Search
  • In that page take note of the server name.
  • Open now CUPS configuration interface: CUPS at localhost
  • Select Add Printer
    • Read more Provide the name of the printer (e.g. 512-1002-HP), a location and a user friendly name
    • Read more Select the LPD/LPR Host or Printer Device
    • Read more The device URI starts with lpd:// hostname/ = the server name your now and /queue = the name of the printer (This is explained in detail here)
    • Read more Finally select a Make (e.g. I selected HP, Laserjet 3015 ps driver --there was no 3005x)
  • You are done! Try submitting a "Test Page"

Same instructions for SL apply. However, Ubuntu offers a GUI for printer setup and configuration which makes things a lot easier.
