Points to be studied before the FP7 proposal

Technologies

  • survey the technologies that can be used to embed data in a document:
    • collaborate with Adobe to extend the PDF format?
    • link to a website?
    • XML, ASCII, ... ?

Check what is missing in experiments

  • check within large collaborations (LHC experiments) how they go about large documents (like the CMS PTDR2 which is 650 pages long and weights 1.5 kg...), so that we can better define how we want to propose that they collaborate online

  • According to a well-placed person in CMS it would be great to have a simpler way to incorporate multiple sources of comments into one document during the review process. The whole review process could be highly simplified.

Lobby for use of tools

  • lobby within all collaborations (LHC, SPS, ISOLDE, etc experiments) for the use of such tools and how they can help (in particular designing it).

  • For the LHC groups there are editorial boards, for the smaller groups I guess it is less formal but still structured.

AB/EDMS documents

  • check with technical services (AB division) how they manage collections of related documents (a la EDMS)

  • EDMS offers authors to editing the documents inside the system. To which extent that is used for documents stored in EDMS I do not know.

EDH-like signatures

  • check what AIS could contribute

The CERN-wide poll (CernLibraryPollFP7)

  • make a CERN-wide poll (not only PH) asking if our ideas are good and if they have the support of a representative user base

Off-site Partnerships

  • Google (the Scholar service for the greater public [is there an European google?])
    • JV has some contacts with Google Books Europe, maybe they could act as our commercial partner. Google has also offices in Zurich.

  • Adobe (owners of PDF)
  • AIS people (already have distributed approval processes)
  • EBSCO ([can't remember the reason])
    • JV: EBSCO expressed informally interest. Could be a commercial partner, but I am not sure if it will be worth while to follow up, it is not their core business.

  • universities (their staff and students can profit from this too)

Other points

  • Re-use of existing infrastructure (CDS, EDMS, AIS)
  • At the end have something that can be used (as opposed to just doing R&D)
  • The role of CERN as a convergence point for actors from all around Europe (and beyond)
