Introduction and Goal of the Note

Di-photon is the most important background for HtoGamGam analysis. In the mass region of 100 to 150 GeV, we are expected to observe hundreds of di-photon candidates with integrated luminosity of 50 pb-1. Among them, the contribution of di-photon is around 60% of the overall backgrounds based on current NLO MC study. The goal of this note is to measure the contribution of di-photon in the context of higgs to gamma gamma analysis with the luminosity of 30-50 pb-1. In order to access that, data-driven methods are being developed to separate di-photon from the other backgrounds such as gam-jet, di-jet and drell-yan contributions as well.

Offline selection

  • Event level selection:
    • Trigger (Note that this has been changed below):
      • Run A-E3 : L1_EM14
      • Run E4-F2: 2g15_loose
      • Run G and higher: 2g15_loose
    • GRL from egamma GRL : /afs/cern.ch/atlas/groups/EGamma/EGammaGRL
    • request the primary vertex to have at least 3 tracks (PV)
  • Object pre-selection by looping all photons candidates with at least two photon candidates satisfying the following selections : (PreSelection)
    • Minimum pt (photon cluster pt) cut : 25 GeV.
    • eta fiducial cuts: |etaS2|<1.37 or |etaS2|>1.52&&|etaS2|<2.37 where etaS2 is the eta in 2nd sampling for photons
    • object quality (egammaOQ::checkOQClusterPhoton must be equal to 1 or 2)
    • IsEM loose
    • jet cleaning
  • Candidates selection: keep the two most energetic candidates that pass the following cuts:
    • pT(leading cluster) >40 GeV, PT(subleading cluster) > 25 GeV (kinematic selection)
    • IsEM tight Robust (Quality)
    • Photon Calo Isolation (ring 0.4)<3 GeV (Calo Isolation)

Acceptance challenge using Offline selection

  • Use Run 167680 in datset group10.phys-higgs.HSG1.PAU-00-02-27.NTUP_Skim_ee_eg_gg_L20L20_data10_7TeV.periodI.NTUP_PROMPTPHOT.p231_v0/ (MC and data preparation section) to reduce ambiguity.
  • Use photon cluster pt for the momentum,
  • Use photon eta in 2nd sampling for fiducial cuts,
  • ph_phi for photon phi,
  • For OTX, use photon cluster barycenter phi and eta.
  • For the calculation of invmass of gamma gamma, photon cluster pt (ph_cl_pt/ph_pt_clus), photon eta in 2nd sampling with Marc's patch (fixed version by Haichen, see below Selection.txt) and photon phi (ph_phi) should be used.

MC and data preparation

Related Monte Carlo

For the purpose of MC and data comparision, we will use full simulated leading order di-photon MC such as PYTHIA, Alpgen etc. and normalize them to high-order corrected generators.
  • Generators used in previous study.
    • DIPHOX : NLO with flexible isolation criteria options (box and born) web page: html
    • RESBOS : Soft-gluon resummation up to next-to-next-to leading logarithmic order. web page: html
  • MC preparation.
    • Diphoton :
      • Born: Alpgen (preparing 4-vector files)
      • Box: Pythia (requested)
    • gam-jet : Asymmetrical filtered PhotonJet sample (requested)
    • Other samples : Drell-Yan, JF17 are the same as before.

  • background most background PAU D3PD ntuples are available with the prodSys made by Leonardo Carminati during august 2010, in the context of SMDP see html with PAU-00-02-27

  • signal H->gamgam without pile-up (PAU-00-02-54) the column replicated means replicated on IN2P3-CC_PHYS-HIGGS
