Date: 16th of October 2003

The ATLAS ATC group is headed by Markus Elsing, my supervisor at CERN. One of the general working areas of this group is the development of the ATLAS Inner Detctor software and the physics validation of the ATLAS software in general.

The main project i could finish in the first three months of my PhD_StaraWersja work was the validation of the ATLAS Inner Detector Geant4 simulation and the creation of a c++/ROOT based stand-alone tool that provides the ability to repeat this validation process for future ATLAS software releases. As the start of the second ATLAS data challenge in spring 2004 gives a well-defined timescale for a stable and validated Geant4 simulation, this work is of big interest. Within the development of this validation tool, the hit read in/write out algorithms for the ATLAS Athena software had to be written/modified for the Inner Detector and severall disagreements/bugs have been found and fixed up to ATLAS release 7.0.0, so that finally the Inner Detector Geant4 simulation shows a good agreement with the former Geant3 simulation, that has been checked against Testbeam data. The developed tool allows to compare the Geant4 simulation for the Pixel, SCT and TRT detector on hit level with former Geant3 or existing Geant4 simulations in terms of energy deposit in the detector sub-elements (silicon modules, straws). Beside this physics validation the tool provides a comparison of the implemented detector geometries, plotting the number of modules/straws hit by single particle tracks.

The results of these studies were presented by me at the Atlas Software Workshop at CERN on the 23rd of September and will be summarized in a ATLAS sofware note. This will include some future CPU times studies (comparison between Geant3/Geant4) which will be done. In order to that a validation of the Inner Detector software after digitization is oncoming.
