CMSSW Error Messages & Fixes

Because stuff never works the first time. And maybe never will.

edm::HepMCProduct ProductNotFound / BetafuncEvtVtxGenerator/'VtxSmeared'

Usually found whilst running cmsRun to generate MC.

----- Begin Fatal Exception 21-Oct-2012 13:08:41 CEST-----------------------
An exception of category 'ProductNotFound' occurred while
[0] Processing run: 1 lumi: 1 event: 1
[1] Running path 'generation_step'
[2] Calling event method for module BetafuncEvtVtxGenerator/'VtxSmeared'
Exception Message:
Principal::getByLabel: Found zero products matching all criteria
Looking for type: edm::HepMCProduct
Looking for module label: generator
Looking for productInstanceName:

Additional Info:
[a] If you wish to continue processing events after a ProductNotFound exception,
add "SkipEvent = cms.untracked.vstring('ProductNotFound')" to the "options" PSet in the configuration.

SOLUTION : Most likely this isn't anything to do with the VtxSmearing or generator modules. Have a look at the config file you're passing to cmsRun - it probably looks bare and doesn't include any of the instructions from the config file fragment passed to cmsDriver. It turns out that cmsDriver can take non-existent files, and not complain - so it won't complain if it doesn't see yours!! (Cheers whoever designed that...) Always check your output file from cmsDriver.py! So now you have to make it see your file:

  • First, make sure it is in a folder of the form Configuration/<some folder name>/python - the python subfolder is the important bit. CMSSW assumes your config file fragment is in a folder called python

  • Then, in that python folder try running scram build so your module can be seen . It might also be worth running scram build in your CMSSW_X_Y_Z/src folder. To be doubley sure, run scram build clean, then scram build in CMSSW_X_Y_Z/src.
  • Also, make sure that when you run cmsDriver you use e.g. cmsDriver.py Configuration/HerwigTest/python/HERWIGPP_POWHEG_H110_bbbar_W_lnu_8TeV_cff.py -s GEN --datatier GEN --eventcontent RAWSIM --conditions auto:mc -n 10 --no_exec - the whole filepath from src is important (here Configuration/HerwigTest/python/cff_file.py). Note that you don't actually have to put in the python folder in your filepath (so here could use Configuration/<some folder name>/file.py) - it assumes your file is in the python folder automatically.
  • Also make sure you're using the right type of file - maybe it needs cmsRun not cmsDriver.py?
  • Also make sure that if you have a line like

from Configuration.Generator.PythiaUEZ2starSettings_cfi import *

then you must checkout that file, or do

 addpkg Configuration/Generator

(or git cms-addpkg Configuration/Generator)

in CMSSW_X_Y_Z/src, and run scram build.

  • If none of that works, try puting the config file fragment somewhere other than in your Configuration/Generator/python folder - it may try and pull the file from the CVS server, not your local file (is there a way to enforce one or the other?).
  • If you are trying to use one of the standard fragments, it's easiest just to do the addpkg command. Note that if you create Configuration/Generator/python yourself, it will not use the file off central CMSSW repo - it will try and look for it in your area!

Hopefully this helps - please let me know if it doesn't, or I've done it wrong. The TWiki pages are woefully useless, and it appears quite often on the Hypernews, so hopefully this will help someone.

Failed to execute script (errno=13, Permission denied)

----- Begin Fatal Exception 23-Oct-2012 18:35:00 CEST-----------------------
An exception of category 'ExternalLHEProducer' occurred while
[0] Processing run: 1
[1] Running path 'p'
[2] Calling beginRun for module ExternalLHEProducer/'externalLHEProducer'
Exception Message:
Failed to execute script (errno=13, Permission denied)
----- End Fatal Exception -------------------------------------------------

SOLUTION: Probably edited some file (maybe in GeneratorInterface/LHEInterface, or in directory to run cfg file?) using Finder. Permissions went crazy? Try creating a new file inside ssh using nano and paste contents in. Do a scram build, maybe a scram clean? In my case, I modified create_lhe_powheg.sh externally and screwed up permissions. So I deleted it, and did a addpkg GeneratorInterface/LHEInterface, a scram b -j 4, then could do cmsRun on my cfg file.

SOLUTION: Shower method is out of date (such as the examples on https://twiki.cern.ch/twiki/bin/view/CMS/ThePEGInterface). Use more up to date method, such as in http://cmssw.cvs.cern.ch/cgi-bin/cmssw.cgi/CMSSW/Configuration/GenProduction/python/EightTeV/HERWIGPP_POWHEG_H120_bbbar_Z_nunu_8TeV_cff.py?view=markup (other HERWIG examples there - look for files starting HERWIGPP).

A good way to start your parameters is by:

    '# Need to use an NLO PDF',
    '#  and strong coupling',
    'cp /Herwig/Partons/MRST-NLO /Herwig/Partons/cmsPDFSet',
    'create Herwig::O2AlphaS O2AlphaS',
    'set /Herwig/Generators/LHCGenerator:StandardModelParameters:QCD/RunningAlphaS O2AlphaS',
    '#  Setup the POWHEG shower',
    'cd /Herwig/Shower',
    'set Evolver:HardEmissionMode POWHEG',

Trying to generate Higgs via VBF using Powheg method when

Error in ThePEG configuration!
Line: insert SimpleQCD:MatrixElements[0] PowhegMEPP2HiggsVBF
Error: There was no object named '/Herwig/MatrixElements/PowhegMEPP2HiggsVBF' in the repository.

SOLUTION: The Process/Matrix Element you typed in doesn't exist. For a list of available processes, do

ls /afs/cern.ch/cms/slc5_amd64_gcc462/external/herwigpp/2.5.0-cms7/include/Herwig++/MatrixElement/

(note version # may have changed by the time you read this. Your version is located in $HERWIGPATH)
