Read the short-term instructions first!
Aqua led Report Summary Maps: BAD if either summary value is below 95%

General Description of ECAL Subsystem Monitorables

The ECAL DQM shows, with few exceptions, the same quantities for the two subsystems EcalBarrel and EcalEndcap in the DQM GUI. It provides both low level quantities (data integrity, synchronization, noise, etc.) to energy reconstruction (hits on the PbWO4 crystals and clusters). Some of the analyses are pre-defined and results are color-coded (red/green/yellow), while other ones are based on statistical comparison with expected distribution (through references: NOT YET AVAILABLE FOR OFFLINE DQM).

00 Report Summary GOOD :

Description: the histogram shows, for each 5x5 crystals matrix, the fraction of good channels / 25. The goodness of the crystal is decided based on the results of many analysis on it. The grid with numbers delimit different readout units (supermodules in barrel, sectors in endcap). They are known as FEDs.
Legend:
GREEN : status = [95-100]%
YELLOW : status = [85-95]%
RED : status = [0-85]%
white: not being readout (not in DAQ)
Interpretation: The regions in the 2D plot should be Green. Red or yellow regions in the histogram would represent problems.
Aqua led Subsystem certification: Mark the subdetector as BAD if the detector report summary for the barrel or endcaps is below 95% (visible in the Summary workspace of the GUI).
Blue led Additional evaluation: If any FED in the barrel or endcaps has a Summary value less than 98% (visible in the Reports workspace), the reason must be identified in the plots below and commented in the Run Registry.

01 Integrity Summary GOOD :

Description: quality summary checking that data for each crystal follows all the formatting rules and all the constraints which are dictated by the design of the electronics.
Legend: GREEN : good; RED : bad; YELLOW : no entries.
Interpretation: It should be all green. A single crystal (a pixel at this scale) with integrity errors is not a problem. This will be skipped in reconstruction. Regions with concentrated red spots are problems because entire trigger towers are badly formatted.
Aqua led Subsystem certification: If more than half of a supermodule/sector has bad integrity, mark the entire subdetector as BAD.
Blue led Additional evaluation: In the presence of big red squares, put the comment "BAD INTEGRITY in sector EB(EE)+(-)XX".

02 Status Flag Summary GOOD :

Description: quality summary of the status of ECAL front end.
Legend: GREEN : good; RED : bad; YELLOW : no entries.
Interpretation: It should be all green, or with dark spots (known problems). If there is one bright red spot, it constitues a problem, since one entire readout tower is malfunctioning.
Aqua led Subsystem certification: If more than half of a supermodule/sector has bad front end, mark the entire subdetector as BAD.
Blue led Additional evaluation: In the presence of bright red squares, put the comment "BAD FRONT-END in sector EB(EE)+(-)XX".

03 PedestalOnline RMS GOOD :

Description: 2D distribution of the level of noise of ECAL (RMS of the pedestals of the crystals). The pedestals are evaluated from the first three pre-samples of the pulse shape.
Legend: BLUE : low noise; YELLOW : medium noise; RED : high noise.
Interpretation: Expected RMS for barrel is 1.1 ADC counts (43 MeV). For Endcap 1.9 ADC counts (120 MeV). It should be all blue/azure. A single noisy crystal (a pixel at this scale) in a given run is not a problem. Diffuse noise in all the barrel/endcap is a problem.
Blue led Additional evaluation: Two adjacent trigger towers red (rectangular areas red) probably means a HV channel off. Call the ECAL HV expert. L-shaped red bars in a supermodule means probably laser events polluting physics events. Call the ECAL laser expert.

04 Occupancy RecHits GOOD :

Description: 2D map and projections in eta/phi and R,phi of the occupancy of reconstructed and calibrated hits above 1 GeV. It is useful, together with the above plots, to locate noisy crystals and correctness of calibrations.
Legend: the darkness of the blue scale is proportional to the average occupancy of the crystal.
Interpretation: Greater occupancy at low abs(eta) is expected (trigger is on ET=E x sin(theta)). Occupancy in phi expected as in the reference figure due to some noise in barrel. If a large spike is visible, it means that there is a very noisy channel. If a hole is visible, it means that a calibration constant is probably set too low. If there are holes or spikes different from those in the reference figures, then the reconstruction is affected.
Aqua led Subsystem certification: Mark the run BAD only if many (>3) large spikes are visible.
Blue led Additional evaluation: Compare with the 03 PedestalOnline RMS plot to check whether any noisy regions correspond to red color there. Write a note in the Run Registry.

05 Occupancy Trigger Primitives GOOD :

Description: 2D map and projections in eta/phi and R,phi of the occupancy of reconstructed trigger primitives. It is useful, together with the above plots, to locate noisy trigger towers or unmasked noisy crystals in the selective readout.
Legend: the darkness of the blue scale is proportional to the average occupancy of the tower.
Interpretation: It should be flat. If a spiking tower is visible, it means that trigger tower is noisy. If a 3x3 matrix of towers is hotter, it could be that a noisy crystal is unmasked in the selective readout and triggering the readout of the 3x3 towers.
Aqua led Subsystem certification: Mark the run BAD only if many (>3) towers are very hot. Endcap: in commissioning phase. Expected behavior is some entries in EE+ and no entries in EE-. Do not include this plot in the quality flag evaluation.
Blue led Additional evaluation: Compare with the 04 Occupancy RecHits plot to see whether any noisy towers correspond to noisy crystals and add a comment in the Run Registry.
Runs with cosmics: sparse events are expected because of low energy deposit of muons in PbWO4 (mip=250 MeV/crystal).

06 Clusters Energy GOOD :

Description: 2D map of the reconstructed basic clusters energy with its eta/phi [R,phi] projections for barrel and endcaps.
Legend: the darkness of the blue is proportional to the energy of the ~5x5 matrix (in GeV).
Interpretation: The distribution should be quite flat in the barrel; in the endcaps, more energy is expected in the central region near the beam line. (With cosmics, the top-bottom supermodules of the barrel should have more energy, while the endcap distributions should be flat.)
Blue led Additional evaluation: If some towers have much more energy than the others, there could be a DAQ or calibration problem. Do not mark the run BAD, but add a comment in the Run Registry.
Runs with cosmics: the clustering algorithms are tuned for electromagnetic showers, not for muons. Expect low energy; higher energy clusters are expected only from rare high-brem muons.
