3rd Generation Leptoquark Searches

Event Generation

5000 events were generated using Pythia 8 with the following properties:

  • Pair production (LQLQ).
  • Both gluon-gluon and q-qbar production modes enabled.
  • k-coupling = 0.01.
  • Leptoquark mass = 300 GeV.
  • Each leptoquark forced to decay to a tau and a b-quark (PDG ID codes = -15 and 5 respectively).
  • Tau decays were handled using Pythia 8 rather than Tauola (the Tauola interface with Pythia 8 does not work yet).

In addition, a filter was applied to ensure that there is at least one lepton with pT > 5 GeV and |eta| < 2.7 in the event to avoid generating events where both taus decay hadronically (BR ~46%) and are of little use to us at this stage.


The reconstruction was done using Atlfast-II to produce AODs and ESDs. This uses full simulation for tracking, and fast simulation (smearing) for calorimetry. This method is approximately 10 times faster than doing the full reconstruction.

D3PD Making

AODs were analysed using the TopD3PDMaker. This requires you to set up the release 16 'TopPhys' cache: asetup,TopPhys and then running the following command:

Please bear in mind that this has not been validated and the cuts have not been optimised in any way, shape or form...
