How to get the initial state radiation uncertainties using the shower weights

Disclaimer: In order to get the radiation uncertainties in MC16, please note that we changed the strategy compared to MC15. Since this is the first time that we also use the shower weights, and hence have to multiply to weights for one systematic uncertainty, we would be very happy to get feedback from you!

Old setup: In MC15 we had three different samples, a nominal one (with hdamp = 1.5 * mtop), a "radHi" one (where the factorisation and renormalisation scales were set to 0.5 and the Var3c Up tune was used and hdamp = 3.0 * mtop) and a "radLo" one, (where factorisation and renormalisation scales were set to 2.0, the Var3c Down tune was used, and hdamp = 1.5 * mtop).

New setup: In MC16, we still want to use the same variations for the renormalisation/factorisation scales, Var3c and hdamp, but in order to save CPU time, we have included some of the variations now as weights. These are multiplicative weights that are stored in the MC sample, and has to be used in a certain way when you want to get the systematic variation. Since the hdamp variation cannot be done with a weight, we still need to produce two samples, one with hdamp = 1.5 * mtop and one with hdamp = 3.0 * mtop.

For a TOPQ derivation the weights are found to be the following:

  • muR=05,muF=05 : weight no. 5
  • muR=20,muF=20 : weight no. 6
  • Var3cUp : weight no. 193
  • Var3cDown: weight no. 194

but this should be explicitly checked per dataset. But the PMG TruthWeightTool can extract these indices for you, see here.

Non-allhadronic:

NOTE: 410470 contains both lepton+jets and dilepton events, while 410480 only contains lepton+jets events!!!

NOTE: There is a statistical overlap between 410470 and 410472, so you cannot use the two samples together! We are working on a tool that allows to remove the dilepton events from 410470 and use 410472 instead, which has larger statistics.

NOTE: You always have to divide the product of the two weights by the nominal weight, for example: muR=05,muF=05*Var3cUp/nominal. Furthermore you have to take this also into account when you calculate the number of events you have in the full sample before applying any cuts!

Dilepton only:

How to get the final state radiation uncertainties using the shower weights

Similar to the initial state variation uncertainty, the final state radiation uncertainty can be estimated using parton shower weights. These weights correspond to the up and down variation of alpha_S^{FSR} and are included in the nominal Powheg+Pythia8 samples 410470, 471, 472 and also the sliced/filtered samples (the latter is to be checked).

For a TOPQ derivation the weights are found to be the following:

  • weight 198 corresponding to "isr:muRfac=10_fsr:muRfac=20"
  • weight 199 corresponding to "isr:muRfac=10_fsr:muRfac=05"

but this should be explicitly checked per dataset, these weight numbers are only valid for the ttbar samples mentioned above!!!. But the PMG TruthWeightTool can extract these indices for you, see here.
