VSSI Centralized General Glossary

A general definition says that a computer cluster consists of a set of loosely connected computers that work together so that in many respects they can be viewed as a single system. The components of a cluster are usually connected to each other through fast local area networks, each node (computer used as a server) running its own instance of an operating system [1].

In VMware words, a cluster is a group of hosts that share resources and a management interface.
Datacenter A general definition says that it is a facility used to house computer systems and associated components, such as telecommunications and storage systems [2].
In VMware words, a datacenter is the primary container of inventory objects, such as hosts and virtual machines.
Datastore A general definition says that it is a data repository of a set of integrated objects [3].
In VMware words, a datastore is a logical container that holds virtual machine files and others files necessary for VM operations.
Domain user User registered in the domain, not in the computer. To start session the network should provide access to the domain.
Host A physical machine in which a hypervisor is running.
Hypervisor Virtual machine managers, operating system who allow virtual machines execution over itself and who is the responsible of translate the virtual instructions to real ones.
Operator user The operator user was traditionally there for simple maintenance, so usually has unrestricted read access to disks (by also being in the operator group) to perform dumps / backups. That way a backup can be taken without requiring root access.
OVF Open Virtualization Format. Is an open standard for packaging and distributing virtual appliances or more generally software to be run in VMs.
Snapshot It is the state of a system at a particular point in time [4]. Should not be used as a long-time backup
