Minor kernel upgrade and asmlib upgrade

This page documents the operations needed for a minor kernel upgrade, in particular

  • RHEL 3 from 2.4.21-37.ELsmp to 2.4.21-47.ELsmp
  • asmlib to version 2

Note: This upgrade is rolling, i.e. can do one rac node at a time

Prerequisites and checks

  • check: sudo more /etc/grub.conf that the kernel is already installed
  • copy the new libraries over:

scp -r oracle@YYYY:/ORA/dbs00/oracle/oracle_binaries/asmlib_rhele47 /ORA/dbs00/oracle/oracle_binaries

  • change quattor config
    • logon to lxadm
    • cdbop
    • get profile_yyy
    • vi profile_yyy
      • 4 changes are needed: kernel and the 3 new asm packages
      • when in doubt copy the changes from a machine where this has been done already
    • up profile_yyy
    • co (commit can take a long time wait for this to finish before rebooting the node)

  • stop oracle services and crs on one node
    • srvctl stop instance -d -i ; stop asm -n; stop nodeapps
    • crsctl stop crs
    • /etc/init.d/oracleasm stop
  • updade ASM packages:
cd /ORA/dbs00/oracle/oracle_binaries/asmlib_rhele47
sudo bash
rpm -qa|grep asm
rpm -U oracl*
(4 depmod error messages are expected)
rpm -qa|grep asm

  • vi /boot/grub/grub.conf and set the new kernel as default (typically default=1, that is the second from top of the list)
  • fix qla2300_conf and the init ramdisk
    ./qla_opts -w --file=/lib/modules/2.4.21-47.ELsmp/kernel/drivers/addon/qla2200/qla2300_conf.o qla2300_conf
    rm /boot/initrd-2.4.21-47.ELsmp.img; mkinitrd /boot/initrd-2.4.21-47.ELsmp.img 2.4.21-47.ELsmp

  • only if needed set /etc/nospma (for example if commit on quattor changes has not finished )
  • mail operators before reboot
  • crsctl disable crs (prevent automatic startup)
  • double check operations above and shutdown -r now

  • wait for the server to come up
  • relink oracle software
    • I can see from tests that oracle exec is not changed, so this it is probably not strictly needed however it is good practice to do it after this kind of operations.
    [as oracle user]
    cd $ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/lib
    relink all
    sudo bash
    crsctl enable crs
    crsctl start crs

  • post install checks:
    • wait 5-10 minutes of uptime (w)
    • uname -a
    • rpm -qa|grep asm
    • sudo more /etc/grub.conf

  • if you remove asmlib completely instead of upgrade, wil need to run oracles configure again
