Present: K. Hanke, T. Zickler, C. Carli, C. De Almeida Martins, B. Mikulec.

Agenda:

  1. Communications
  2. Follow-up of open actions
  3. Status of magnet and power converter inventory of the Linac4 to PSB transfer line
  4. Planning: Can PSB installation be done in parallel with transfer line commissioning?
  5. Note

1. Communications:

A budget has been attributed to the Booster Commissioning Working Group. The planned spending scheme is ~50% for the year 2012 and the rest for 2013.

2. Follow-up of open actions:

  • LT.BHZ20: T. Zickler still has to do some field quality checks, but he believes that the field strength should be sufficient. The cooling capacity requires further investigation.

  • Kickers in LBE line: K. Hanke said that there seems to be nobody anymore responsible for the kickers in the LBE line. Originally they 'belonged' to the old Linac section. A new responsible should therefore be found.

  • List of power converters: C. De Almeida provided information concerning the power converters of the old transfer line (see next point).

3. Status of magnet and power converter inventory of the Linac4 to PSB transfer line:

C. De Almeida has checked and filled in the power converter status in the inventory for the old transfer line. This file was sent to A. Lombardi who added the latest parameters from the beam optics simulations.

C. De Almeida proposed to replace the 3 Tekelec power supplies as they are very old and unreliable. This has already been mentioned to S. Baird in the framework of the PS complex consolidation (all the Tekelec power supplies will be replaced). Confirmation to cover the cost for this replacement (~350 kCHF) still has to be obtained from him (not included in the original Linac4 budget request).

C.DeAlmeida 2008-02-07 Clarify with S. Baird if the consolidation budget can cover the replacement of the old Linac2 Tekelec power supplies. See minutes 10/04/2008. edit

T. Zickler added that the following magnets and power supplies need to be replaced:
LT.QFW70, BI.Q10, BI.Q20, BI.Q30, BI.Q40 and most probably also LBE.QFW10 and LBE.QFW20.
This is because pulsed operation not feasible with the old ones is now required.
C. De Almeida explained that PO has two types of pulsed power supplies available: either MiniDisCap (20 A, 700 V, ~7 kCHF) or MaxiDisCap (300 A, 900 V, ~15 kCHF); both types will also be used in the new transfer line.
It may be possible to adapt the magnet design of the quadrupoles in the LBE line such that the Enerton power supplies can be re-used (DC, water cooled?). This can be checked once simulation results of the LBE line will be available.

T. Zickler will verify if the magnet design for the bendings can also be adapted such that only one type of power supply can be used.

B. Mikulec proposed to also take into account if extra cabling is required including interlocks etc. This information should also be added to the inventory table. K. Hanke will update the table and add it on the web page once T. Zickler will confirm the above-mentioned items.

4. Planning: Can PSB installation be done in parallel with transfer line commissioning?

In the Linac4 planning there are 4 months attributed for the PSB commissioning. The preceding modifications to the PSB injection period have to be made in parallel with the transfer line commissioning (new and old transfer line). This will only be possible adding a beam stopper somewhere at the end of the Linac 2 line, but there is very little space available. It would also be convenient to have the possibility to add a beam stopper at the end of the new transfer line. K. Hanke offered to contact RP to find out if it is acceptable to have the beam dumped continuously on a beam stopper during the commissioning period (with reduced beam power). Otherwise a different solution has to be found. He will also check out a possible location for the beam stopper with R. Scrivens.

K.Hanke 2008-02-07 Contact RP to find out if it is acceptable to have the beam dumped continuously on a beam stopper during the commissioning period. This is not possible. edit
K.Hanke 2008-02-07 Identify with R. Scrivens a possible location for a beam stopper at the end of the Linac2 line for the transfer line commissioning period. Irrelevant as it is not acceptable to use a beam stopper for commissioning. edit

As the commissioning periods might be quite stressful, it was discussed whether some installations/tests could be brought forward. It might be possible to install the new magnets and power supplies for the old transfer line already during the 2011/2012 shutdown. In this case commissioning of this new equipment could already be done in 2012 with Linac2.
Other items that might be brought forward could be the installation of the 3 new power supplies for BI.SMV and for BI.BVT, but this has first to be checked with W. Weterings.

Assigned to Start date Description State Result
W.Weterings 2008-02-07 Clarify with C. De Almeida if it would be possible to operate BI.SMV and BI.BVT with the new power supplies and Linac2 operation. See also minutes from 20/03/2008. The power supplies should work for both Linac4 and Linac2 operation. edit

5. Note:

The note requires more reflection.
