Minutes of the Booster Commissioning Working Group held on 20th of December 2007

2. Follow-up of open actions:

  • LT.BHZ20: The bending angle of LT.BHZ20 will change from +11 deg. to -25 deg. with LINAC4 operation. T. Zickler stated that most probably the magnet can be reused, but he still has to confirm the situation for the power supply.
  • Quadrupoles in the LTB line: the most recent simulation presented by G. Bellodi in the previous meeting showed that two quadrupoles were close or above the limits for the power supply. C. Carli had proposed last time to check whether the quads could be slightly displaced to reduce the required fields. A. Lombardi said that she was not in favour of this procedure, but would rather buy a few new power supplies. She also stated that everybody should be careful to allow for large enough margins when checking the specifications as the design of the line is still evolving. C. De Almeida agreed to this.
  • Kickers in the LBE line: K. Hanke did not yet succeed to identify a responsible for the LBE line kickers. T. Fowler promised him to look into this problem. Simulations still need to be done to determine the final parameters.
  • Complete magnet list: K. Hanke has worked on completing the original magnet list from A. Lombardi. Nevertheless it seems more logical to leave the update of the file centrally with A. Lombardi. She will take care of keeping it up to date on EDMS with the design of the line evolving. C. De Almeida and T. Zickler were asked to add the operational range to the equipment of the old line. T. Zickler mentioned that he was anyway working on a complete inventory that should be ready around end of January. W. Weterings pointed out that the specifications for BI.BVT have to be adapted to the new injection scheme (Bdl*1.9).

3. Transfer line issues:

  • Instrumentation for the new transfer line: SEM-grid monitors are already implemented in the current design; A. Lombardi will find out the details. Position monitors and BLMs will be essential. A. Lombardi promised to provide K. Hanke with further information on this subject. After the meeting she confirmed that there are currently 6 x,y beam centre position monitors in the new part of the line to be used for steering the beam. In the old transfer line design (LINAC4 in the PS South Hall) there were 17 BLMs and 6 profile monitors foreseen.
  • Instrumentation for the PSB injection period: it is desired to measure the stripping efficiency with a total of 3 screens (2 before dump and 1 at injection). It is also needed to crosscheck the suitability of the instrumentation installed in the rings and in the line to the dump.
  • Line LINAC4 to dump: B. Mikulec reported on the progress of the design of the straight line from the LINAC4 exit to the dump. In the present layout there are 14 m foreseen from the end of the last cavity until the end of the dump (the dump depth is around 5 m). It is proposed to use the same arrangement of a combined quadrupole steerer plus diagnostics equipment at the PIMS exit as is used at the CCDTL exit; the diagnostics there comprises already 1 beam current transformer, 1 SEM-grid and 1 current pickup. Therefore M. Eshraqi will have to update the beginning of the LINAC4 to LINAC2 transfer line as currently there is not enough space to add this combined equipment. In addition to this, a Feshenko monitor should be added for commissioning. U. Raich has promised to obtain additional information about the Feshenko monitor. After the first horizontal bender, an emittance measurement is foreseen. Due to the emittance growth in this part of the line, it seems currently not feasible to use 3 SEM-grid monitors for this purpose. An emittance measurement with moving slit and one SEM-grid is under investigation.

4. AOB:

It was discussed to take up again the project of writing a note. As there are already notes published on the transfer line design, the note should focus on the PSB injection.
