F. Gerigk, K. Schirm, R. Wegner, P. Ugena-Tirado

General: RF Structure Meeting

  • The character of the meeting will change from RF development towards production follow-up, RF testing and installation.

Linac4 planning (F. Gerigk)

  • For the MTP it was decided to connect Linac4 to the PSB in the 2nd long shutdown and not in the 1st, which is foreseen for 2013/14.
  • The Linac4 planning for commissioning in 2014, however, remains intact in case the connection plans are changed again.

CCDTL (F. Gerigk)

  • BINP visit 1-3. March 2011: discussion on optimum installation procedure, Q-value measurements were better than expected, copper plating was excellent, some problems were discovered with the surfaces for Helicoflex joints,
  • the CERN drawings for the support were discussed and some last modifications proposed
  • a memorandum was written by F. Gerigk and A. Tribendis on: i) project extension, ii) construction schedule, iii) payment of remaining instalments according to milestones,
  • On March 23d visit of Gudowsky and Malakhov at CERN, during this time we should sign the memorandum,
  • The possibility of constructing the supports at BINP is being explored. This could happen within a new framework which fosters a Russian participating in the LHC upgrade.

India (F. Gerigk)

  • The director was very supportive for the suggestions for hardware construction for Linac4.
  • RRCAT plans to build a linac based spallation source in Indore.
  • RRCAT: discussion to construct waveguide couplers at RRCAT. Needs clarification of a number of technical points.
  • Construction of jacks (+ jacks for 4-5 Dipoles) at Indo-German Toolshop. This is the same company as for LHC jacks.
  • BARC plans to build an ADS linac + facility on the Norheastern coast. They showed RFQ prototypes, and they are interested in DTL technology.
  • A video conference will be organised soon

Linac4 windows (F. Gerigk)

  • Thales visit yesterday. CERN window design promises to save about 50% of the regular Thales window price.
  • An adaption of the Thales design to the CERN design was suggested to reduce cost. Technical options are explored and a video conference will take place end of next week.
  • An agreement in time for the June FC meeting seems difficult (submission of documents by mid-April).
  • Brazing results of the CERN window are expected within 1-2 weeks. Right now we are not able to measure a damping below -20 dB (~1%) with the standard wave-guide to N transitions.
  • Present Thales design does not fulfil the specs, which demands operation in full reflection with a movable short circuit at one side, -> we need to make simulations at CERN to see where we expect the field maxima, when the cavity reflects the power due to a break-down.

PIMS (R. Wegner)

  • Material for series production has arrived at IPJ
(details: 78 rings, 13 WG-rings, 26 discs, 8 end discs, copper for tuner ports, RF ports and fixed tuner, 40 RF port flanges, 14 tuner port flanges, material for WG flange, cooling circuits, spacer, transport blocks)
  • Machining of test pieces has started, problem with ellipticity of rings due to stresses (probably introduced by the jaws used for fixation)
  • New jaws are being produced that will envelop the rings to equalise the forces applied
  • A visit to Poland is planned soon with an experienced tuner to exchange practical experience

SM18 test stand (R. Wegner)

  • Modification are ongoing, the high voltage cage has been moved to other side.
  • The test stand should be ready in Mai / June for testing Linac accelerating structures
