4. AOB

1. Communications

2. Follow-up of open actions

Action for C.Vuitton and Y.Cuvet to produce working drawings for the profile monitors. C.Vuitton reports that a first iteration of the CCDTL inter-tank region including magnets, pick-ups and profile monitors is expected for the end of this week. It will be presented at the next meeting.

Action for U.Raich to develop a controls strategy for the diagnostics. At the last meeting two possible solutions had been presented, the commercial INCAA module and a home-made BI card. As for the INCAA module one has to wait anyway, it has been decided to go ahead with the prototype of the new BI card. It is hoped to have a prototype working by the end of 2007 and a series production by February/March 2008. The INCAA card (developed to CERN specifications and on CERN budget in industry) is expected in April 2008 (first prototype). The CERN card is by far cheaper than the INCAA module which is why BI have a preference for this card, provided the prototype behaves as expected.

K.Hanke noted that CO support only the INCAA module and that BI needs to ensure support of their developement.

Action for E.Bravin to draft a time planning for the emittance meter; see presentation by D.Gerard.

Action for K.Hanke to make an inventory of applications needed and forward the list to J.Serrano. K.Hanke has made a list of diagnostics that require an application to be written:

  • slow wire scanners: application needed.
  • SEM grids: generic application exists
  • transformers: put on OASIS
  • BSHM: stand-alone application exists
  • pick-ups: application needed, in particular for phase and intensity.
  • emittance meter: applicatoin needed.
  • Faraday cups: OASIS
  • BLMs: to be clarified.
  • LBE/LBS lines: to be clarified.
  • A Linac4 Vistar will be needed.

The information will be sent to J.Serrano.

Action for U.Raich to collect the information on alignment and communicate it to F.Gerigk. The following information could be collected: pick-ups aligned via the magnet; wire scanners and SEM grids: aligned via the support ("clavette"); transformers: nothing foreseen.

3. Emittance meter status and plans

D.Gerard presented the status of the emittance meter Linac4_em.ppt. The device is presently being designed for 45keV, but it must be as far as possible compatible for energies up to 12MeV (DTL tank 1). For higher energy probably cooling of the slit is needed, whch is not foreseen for the LEBT (mechanically delicate and time delay to do simulations not compatible with source schedule). This means that the device (the vacuum tank and the mechanics) need to be modified for use at 3MeV and 12MeV. K.Hanke noted that it is planned to install the emittance meter on the so-called D-plate, a movable table which contains diagnostics (emittance, tranformer, Faraday cup) and can characterise the beam at different stages of the installation. K.Hanke said that the design of this D-plate should start soon. U.Raich will organise this.

As for the cooling of the slit, simulations are needed. This will delay the construction of the device, which is why modifications cannot be done any more for the 45keV version. However, for the high-energy version simulations will be done. G.Tranquille will organise this.

The time planning for the emittance meter is:

  • design finished 1st week of January 2008
  • 2 manths to produce drawings
  • 2 months for manufacturing, including drawing approval
  • device ready by summer 2008

R.Scrivens confirmed that this time planning is OK with the overall planning of the source. First beam out of the source is expected not before July 2008.

R.Scrivens asked whether the controls for the emittance meter can be expected to be ready by July 2008. See discussion at the beginning of this meeting. If the BI card works fine then it will be possible to have read-out for the emittance meter by summer 2008. If the BI card fails and the INCAA card has to be used, this is excluded.

R.Scrivens asked what needs to be done by CO. U.Raich said that a new FESA class is needed. A.Lokhovitskiy said that once the prototype of the card is ready they will do software tests.

R.Scrivens asked whether the motor driver is being taken care of. E.Bravin said that he sees no problems with this. As for the mechanics (long bellows, long travel distance) he will discuss with D.Gerard.

4. AOB

R.Scrivens has published a document for approval (https://edms.cern.ch/document/879994/1), but received only comments from D.Kuchler and K.Hanke. The deadline to give comments is 19 November. R.Scrivens asks everybody to give comments before the end of the week.

K.Hanke said that for the next meeting he will invite representatives from AB/BT to discuss the diagnostics needed for H- injection into the Booster.

Next meeting in 2 weeks, place and time to be confirmed.
