1. Communications

A Russian colleague has been selected by CO to work on the application for the emittance scanner. He will come in the middle of August and be paid by the CO budget for Linac4.

2. Follow-up of open actions

Budget breakdown: In progress.

Loss map: A.Lombardi says that work needs to be prioritised, and they are now working on the simulation of the movable bench. Detailed beam loss simulations will only be done by January 2009. E.Sargsyan is now working for MedAustron, therefore the action will be assigned to G.Bellodi.

Spectrometer magnet for movable bench: U.Raich has contacted T.Zickler but got no reply. He will iterate again.

Work package description: In progress. Together with K.Hanke an up-to-date inventory of all the diagnostics has been produced.

Cable for emittance scanner slit: U.Raich has not progressed on this.

Feshenko monitor: No news.

IPHI measurement line: U.Raich has not yet contacted P.Ausset.

3. Diagnostics for the transfer line

A.Lombardi presented the diagnostics presently used in the simulation input file for the new part of the transfer line. The length of the transfer line is approximately 180m. The beam properties are difficult to manage (strong space charge together with high dispersion). In their simulations they use so far 14 "screens". These monitors are supposed to measure beam position and size in x and y with a precision of 0.5 - 1mm (the rms beam size is of the order of 4mm). In addition, there are 7 transformers which are specified to measure the beam current within 1% precision. According to U.Raich this is just about the limit for transformers. The point was raised that the pick-ups to be designed by L.Soby also measure the beam current, but the precision which can be achieved needs to be confirmed. For a precise beam current measurement transformers are the best choice. K.Hanke noted that for operation a number of pick-ups, which permanently monitor the beam trajectory without intercepting the beam, is essential. This means that the 14 position monitors will be covered by pick-ups. However, the pick-ups do not measure the beam profile. For this dedicated profile monitors will be needed, which can be e.g. SEM grids, wire scanners or view screens. BI will propose technical solutions. As this is a cost driver, it will then be confirmed whether profile measurement is really required at all these 14 locations. Attached is teh presentation by A.Lombardi as well as the simulation input file from which the location of the diagnostics can be seen.

For the existing part of the transfer line, it is for the moment assumed that the existing diagnostics will be used.
