6. Next meeting
1. General news and facts
- R. Garoby spoke with V. Vuillemin about the possible support from the TS department for the SPL study. A willingness to help was established, and it was confirmed that S. Calatroni can continue his work. It was also confirmed by Lucio Rossi that V. Parma can continue with his work on the cryo-modules and that the AT department can take over the design of superconducting quadrupoles, if needed for the SPL.
- The present funding situation for all white paper activities is not entirely clear. Right now all expenditures are blocked, even for Linac4 but it is hoped that the situation will be resolved within a few days.
- R. Garoby/R. Losito: there seems to be an interest within FNAL to participate/collaborate with the SPL study and possibly US-LARP could be used for funding. It is not clear though if this will materialise. Also the status of Project X is not transparent for us right now.
- French in-kind contribution to the SPL: the DG stressed that the FP7 contributions from France for the SPL cannot be counted as French in-kind contributions. R. Garoby sent a list of possible items for an in-kind contributions to the DG, which could include: contributions to the cryo-module design and construction (mainly drawing office activities), unsuited items are: low-level RF, modulator development.
2. Frequency & cryogenic temperature
- the frequency choice for the SPL (704 or 1408 MHz) should be settled until June,
- F. Gerigk, E. Ciapala, and W. Weingarten will collect data on 2K, 4.5K and the frequency/gradient question for the next meeting,
- after this data is collected, we should decide if want to organise a small expert meeting (e.g. with H. Padamsee, L. Lilje, C. Pagani, S. Chel, I. Campisi)
3. outcome of Linac4 review meeting
In the recent
Linac4 review meeting
the project was presented in its entirety, and reviewed by a small group of experts (S. Henderson, SNS; Y. Yamazaki, JPARC; U. Ratzinger, Frankfurt University; G. Geschonke, CERN). The overall outcome was very positive but a certain number of subjects remain to be resolved:
- the chopper voltage should be increased to increase the efficiency of the device: it should be avoided to have a fraction of the beam travelling down the accelerator after chopping,
- a new design for EMQs is needed that is suitable for the SPL duty cycle and which fits into the foreseen space, it must be clear that a technical solution can be found,
- there are various duty cycles mentioned for the SPL, an official list for different scenarios should be established, ideally the klystrons should have between 5 and 10% duty cycle (klystron manufacturers need to be contacted),
- a dedicated linac low-level RF system needs to be developed, it seems difficult only to adapt LHC type solutions to Linac4,
4. Round table
- S. Calatroni is in contact with S. Chel on the outer copper coating of the HIPPI couplers (1 MW, 704 MHz),
- M. Eshraqi will spend some of his time on SPL simulations, F. Gerigk will send the various frequency scenarios to A. Lombardi,
