This page details the availability and locations of MC used for the ZZ4l Anomalous Study in Summer 2015.
Overview
MCDB Instructions
In general, LHE extraction works like this:
1. Identify the MCDB ID from
McM (or PREP if the sample is old). Finding the correct sample on
McM takes some time. You would think that just knowing the name should be sufficient, but
McM has been terrible at parsing wildcards appropriately in my experience.
For example, here is the list of all samples processed from Phantom (these pages take a long long time to load):
https://cms-pdmv.cern.ch/mcm/requests?page=-1&generators=phantom&shown=127
To find a sample, go to Navigation. Put a fraction of the dataset name into the dataset_name dialog with wildcards, or if you only need one sample and aren’t entirely sure of the name, you can press the arrow and all possible dataset names (thousands and thousands) will be listed. Typically, I use a piece that should reduce it down to all the samples I want, like
CTau or set the generator to “phantom”. Note that case DOES matter and there are multiple options (5 different JHU, 5 different Madgraphv5) with no overlap.
When you finally think you have the sample you want, go to “Select View” and check “Mcdb id”. Over at the far right of the table, it will be listed for all relevant samples. Not all samples have an LHE file for one of two reasons: 1) It was made via Pythia directly or 2) You’re looking at a process that doesn’t need the LHE file. Each LHE file goes into a campaign designed for that particular energy and not all stages of the campaign list the MCDB ID.
2. Download the LHE file from that EOS space.
Once you have the MCDB ID, it’s not that hard. On lxplus, just run
cmsLs /store/lhe/
to list the contents of the EOS space for that sample. A line will output all of the files in that directory. To download, just run
xrdcp root://eoscms//eos/cms/store/lhe// .
and it will copy it to your local directory. Be wary that the LHE files could easily be a few GB large or more.

NOTE: Each file contains 250 events. Most jobs appear to have successfully completed, but a few isolated jobs may not be perfect. Not all events from the LHE file have been hadronized due to failed jobs/sufficient statistics. Scripts used to submit hadronization and actual jobs submitted can be found on lxplus at /afs/cern.ch/work/a/anderso/public/Hadronizing/.
