Page with notes on Antek's MSc thesis on HGTD Test Beam experiments. Proposed title (could be changed): Measurements of the performance of prototype sensors for the ATLAS High-Granularity Timing Detector.

Goals for the analysis

General idea: investigate effects which can cause errors in data taking by studying the data from Test Beam experiments from September 2017 and compare it with earlier taken data. Some suggestions on what can be interesting:

  • LGADs and their edges: How well is do the data collection behave on the edges? Is the data taking dependent on the distance from the "fully efficient" area to the edge of an LGAD? How is it different from the array pad versus a single pad? Is there are difference between radiated and irradiated sensors?
  • Time resolution of an LGAD: Usually the time resolution is referenced to the SiPM and only one LGAD. Can this be improved by taking into consideration more references, such as other LGADs at the same time?
  • Background noise: How do the noise change and what can one deduce from it? Is the noise dependent on different producers of the LGADs? Is there a temperature dependence? Are there other factors which causes the noise to be different?

Timeline

This is a preliminary timeline, more should be included about the goals mentioned above.

  • End of 2017: Done with the analysis of data
  • First draft of the report: 1st of February 2018 (have some time to review the report for myself)
  • Hand in the final report: 12th of February 2018 (two weeks before to let relevant persons to read it through)
  • Presentation date: 26th of February 2018

Divide up quantities of interest and variables

Q: Amplitude, time resolution, noise level, efficiency and efficiency as a function of x,y (where it hits)

V: Temperature, producer, radiation level oscilloscope data, to understand better how the data taking behaves to study the quantities of interest.

Bias voltage and leakage of the LGADs, silicon detectors in general could have an impact. Note that run log takes into consideration different voltage, since there could be different leakge (see run log).

The oscilloscope which were used is in TB 2017 were Agilent Infiniium DSO9254A.
