Description of the exercise

Main concepts are::
  • illustration of RAID techniques: how to configure a disk array concerning
  • LUN and RAID configuration
  • benchmarking to see the difference in performance between the different configurations
  • file systems installation and configuration IP_based and fibre channel, difference between NAS and SAN
  • it would be possible to show how to implement a file system but this could take more time

What will the students learn

  • RAID and LUN concepts
  • file system
  • performance benchmarking

Duration

The students should be able to complete an exercise in 2 hours.

List of material

This lab wouldn't require a complex infrastructure, we probably need two or three pcs, a storage switch (Fibre Channel), a disk array and Ethernet connection. This would allow the presentation of LUNs, multipath, filesystem.

Relevant information

If we go for an integration of the network/event-builder lab with this one to make a "full DAQ", there are different possibilities to store the data: 1- The Event-Builder runs on the SAN nodes and write directly to the SAN file system. 2- The Event-Builder runs on different nodes and the physics file system is exported to these nodes via NFS.
