General information

All requests using Pythia in Run 2 should use Pythia8 unless there is a reason that Pythia6 must be used. Pythia8 generator fragments should use the CUETP8M1 tune. You can see an example of its implementation here.

All Run 2 requests that use LHE files will need to have their cards added to the genproductions github repository. This allows the generator conveners to look for any problems early on before more is produced and time and resources are wasted. MadGraph5_aMC@NLO and POWHEG requests will be produced using gridpacks in Run 2 unless there is a reason that that method of production cannot work for a request. Other generators will still need to use privately produced LHE files.

High priority requests

Requests normally take about a month or two to run. If you need your requests finished sooner, please give us the date they need to be completed by along with the reason they need to be completed by then.

Submitting requests

To submit requests, you will need to fill out a Google spreadsheet and email it to us along with the paths to any new fragments, gridpacks, and LHE files. We will handle all testing related to McM; you should just test that what you send produces what you want generated.

Pythia-only requests

Create a copy of this spreadsheet and fill it with the following information:

  • Dataset name This will form part of the dataset name in DAS. See ProductionDataSetNames for how to format the name.
  • Number of events
  • Name of generator fragment
  • Generator Set this to "pythia8" or "pythia6" as appropriate.
  • Cross section [pb] Add a column with this information if the samples you are requesting are intended for use by multiple groups (e.g., backgrounds) or you have independent estimates of the cross section. This can be left out for all other requests and the cross section will be set to 1 in McM.
  • Efficiency This is the ratio of events actually produced in the output ROOT file to the number you ran over. If the value is near 1, you do not need to include this information. Otherwise, add columns for the efficiency and efficiency error to the spreadsheet.

Send us the editable spreadsheet along with the path to you generator fragments. We will add the fragments to the genproductions repository on github and put your requests into McM.

Central LHE requests

All MadGraph and POWHEG requests for Run 2 need to be generated with gridpacks unless there is a reason this cannot work for a request.

Before generating gridpacks, your cards need to be added to the genproductions github for MagGraph or POWHEG so the conveners can look at them. You can send us the location of your cards and we will add them for you. Please put your cards into a similar directory structure as you can see in genproductions.

Once your cards have been approved, you should generate your gridpacks according to the instructions for MadGraph5_aMCatNLO or POWHEG. Although adding the cards to genproductions first is not strictly necessary, it will prevent you from having to recreate the gridpacks if someone finds an error in your cards.

Create a copy of this spreadsheet and fill it with the following information:

  • Dataset name This will form part of the dataset name in DAS. See ProductionDataSetNames for how to format the name.
  • Number of events
  • Name of hadronizer fragment You can find generic hadronizers here.
  • Gridpack location The complete path and file name of each gridpack.
  • Gridpack cards URL The URL to the gridpack's cards in the genproductions repository on github. Please link to a specific commit rather than the master branch as the cards in the latter might change over time (e.g., like this, not this).
  • Generator Set this to "madgraph" or "powheg".
  • Cross section [pb] Add a column with this information if the samples you are requesting are intended for use by multiple groups (e.g., backgrounds) or you have independent estimates of the cross section. This can be left out for all other requests and the cross section will be set to 1 in McM.

Private LHE requests

All MadGraph and POWHEG requests for Run 2 need to be generated with gridpacks unless there is a reason this cannot work for the request. If you are using those generators follow these instructions. All other generators (and MadGraph or POWHEG for 8 TeV) can use these instructions for submitting their requests.

Before generating LHE files, your cards should to be added to the genproductions github so the conveners can look at them. You can send us the location of your cards and we will add them for you. Once your cards are approved, generate your private LHE files.

Create a copy of this spreadsheet and fill it with the following information:

  • Dataset name This will form part of the dataset name in DAS. See ProductionDataSetNames for how to format the name.

  • Generator The name of the generator you are using.
