During irradiation

Dose rate calculation

We decided to try and calculate the dose rate to see if we could match the rate Martin calculated using the NEIL conversion factor for protons.

Martin's method

  • Average beam current = 80 nA
  • NEIL factor for protons: 0.711
  • Beam spot assumed to be circle of radius 1 cm.

Average number of protons per second is then: beam current/ charge of proton = $8\times10^{-8}/1.6\times10^{-19}$

Equivalent number of neutrons per second: NEIL factor * protons per second = $ \left(8\times10^{-8}\;/\;1.6\times^10{-19}\right) \times 0.711$

Convert to units of $[ s^{-1} cm^{-2}]$: protons per second / pi = $ \left(8\times10^{-8}\;/\;1.6\times^10{-19}\right) \times 0.711 \times \frac{1}{\pi}$

This is then the neutron equivalent dose rate = $113\times 10^9 1~MeV$ neutron equivalent fluence (neq) $cm^{-2} s^{-1}$

So, in 30 hours (1,800 minutes) we'd expect to have attained a neq dose of: $113\times 10^9 \times 3600 \times 30 = 1.22\times 10^{16} neq \;cm^{-2}$

Calculated dose rate

First, establish the average number of protons per second per square cm assuming a circular beam spot of radius 1cm, as before:

\[ \frac{8\times10^{-8}}{\pi \times 1.6\times 10^{-19}} = 1.6\times 10^{11}~cm^{-2}\;s^{-1}\]

Then using the stopping power of 800 MeV protons in Silicon from http://physics.nist.gov/cgi-bin/Star/ap_table.pl, calculate the dose rate in units of MeV per gram per second

\[ 1.6\times 10^{11} \times 1.899  = 3.02\times 10^{11}~MeV\;g^{-1}\;s^{-1} \]

Then convert our dose rate into something more familiar using:

\[ 1\; Rad = 6.2415 \times 10^{7}~MeV\;g^{-1}\]

So dose rate in kRad/s becomes:

\[ \frac{3.0224\times 10^{11}}{ 6.2415 \times 10^{7}} = 4,842.3493 \approx 4.84~kRad\;s^{-1}\]

And in 30 hours we'd then expect to attain:

\[ 4.8423\times 10^{3} \times 3600 \times 30 = 522,973,733 \approx 523~MRad\]

Measurement timetable (subject to change!)

Setup from 10AM - 2PM. Other groups had issues with cabling and alignment till ~5.

Penultimate entry for tonight's shift, RP found that the rates around the boards were now between 90-150 mR/h (quite a broad range...?) but that 2 hours seems like a good cool down period for 1 hour runs if we want access.

UNM students checked their alignement with a diode array and (bizarrely) attempted to realign the box themselves. Luckily there were a bunch of steel bricks surrounding the box so they couldn't move it too much.
11 6:39 300.0 150.0 3.1 2.04E+15 87.16 Remove 5 UNM cards. At 7:37 the beam went down for 15 minutes. After opening the surveyor found that there was an activity of 100 mR/h above crates, 150 mR/h @ beam stop + magnets, 50 mR/h 1ft away from side of crate. Beam was lost for 40 minutes after close so next run started a bit later.
12 13:36 540.0 240.0 3 3.67E+15 156.89 12 UNM cards removed + FEAST removed + 150 MRad FE65_P2 removed and exchanged with the 350 MRad FE65_P2 (module #'s 6 & 13) Beam lost for 5 minutes during run @ 15:24. Waited ~45 for RP to survey (busy night for LANSCE!). Sweep found 180 mR/h above cards. After extraction of the 15 cards and installation of new cards rate dropped to 100 mR/h. We suggested RTP survey the freezer area and they found it to be above the minimum activity allowed for being put into a High Radiation area and cordoned off the freezers. In this case it means little s any who enter the blue Room must have the same dosimetry as that required to enter a High Radiation area but it at least alerts people to the content of the freezers. At 21:00 We are waiting for beam which has been lost for ~40 minutes upstream. CCR expect nothing for at least 1 hour which means we will probably fall short of our 500 MRad program. 22:27: update - beam is there but unstable so they want to wait before they deliver so they can accurately measure the fluence. Will get back to us soon. Some data was lost, please see not below*.
13 23:35 900.0 360.0 3 6.11E+15 261.49 Remove 2 UNM cards Run completed at 5:40 am. With current plans for cool-down and access we will lose last 7 hours of beam and only end up irradiating to 400 MRad. One of the UNM cards had already been removed. It looks like Timon had noticed a card was missing at the end of run 12 and although he reported it to Martin that information was not propagated to the next shift (and neither wrote it in the log book) so there was some confusion later.
14 8:53 1676.0 776.0 9 1.14E+16 486.95 End of run - all cards left to cool for as long as possible till next experiment arrives. At 10AM one of the technicians measured the beam current to be 72 uA @ 60Hz with a beam bunch + spacing of 150 us and 12.5 us (not sure which is which). Also, cryptically: "We see ~400 pV/s in lunchbox". Turns out the lunchbox is the little Tetronix scope in the shift area connected to the monitor around the toroid in the blue room. Lost beam from 21:02-21:13. 11 minutes lost. The estimated dose has been updated accordingly. Lost beam again at 21:27 - this time because of a 'water leak'. CCR estimated there would be no beam for at least half an hour and the hard end to the run is 22:00. So the run ended half an hour early.
* Data lost as one power supply went down at around 7:30 in the morning (we left at 6 after a 22 hour shift so didn't get back to it till 6pm. We lost 11 hours total time but only 6 hours of beam data.)
