Sample production

For all produced samples the official Athena release 15.1.0 was used unless indicated otherwise. At first we produced a sample of 100k events as a basis for the following steps. This sample contains only primary, single muon particles with a transverse momentum pT=100 GeV starting at the vertex point (0,0,0). The range covered is eta=[-3.0,3.0] and phi=[-3.14159, 3.14159] and the official transforms given below were used. The resulting output file is available at /castor/cern.ch/grid/atlas/atlasgroupdisk/det-muon/15.1.0/MC8.107218.singlepart_mu100.evgen.pool.root .

The first hits and digits samples were also produced by these official transforms for the geometry layout ATLAS-GEO-06-00-00. For better manageability the 100k events were split in 1k hits and digits per pool file, respectively which can be found on castor in /castor/cern.ch/grid/atlas/atlasgroupdisk/det-muon/15.1.0/GEO-06/simul and /castor/cern.ch/grid/atlas/atlasgroupdisk/det-muon/15.1.0/GEO-06/digit . Another positive effect of arranging the generation like this is that parallel computing is possible through scripts as the one attached (simul_digi.sh).

For the second set of samples the tag ATLAS-GEO-08-00-00 (version 08 May 2009) was used. Note that this tag was not closed at the time of production. While the generation of hits was done as usual with the transforms, the digitization step is different. For digitization we made use of a script based on the JobOptions DigitizationRTT_all.py including a private version of the package MDT_Digitization developed by Andrea Dell'Acqua. With this package we were able to mask all EES chambers and all EEL chambers but EEL1A05, EEL1C05, EEL*C09, EEL*A11, EEL**13, EEL*C15 which are accordingly the only EE* chambers affected in the digits file. All the results are stored in /castor/cern.ch/grid/atlas/atlasgroupdisk/det-muon/15.1.0/GEO-08/simul and /castor/cern.ch/grid/atlas/atlasgroupdisk/det-muon/15.1.0/GEO-08/digit, respectively .

Checking ATLAS-GEO-06-00-00 against ATLAS-GEO-08-00-00

For the validation we used a slightly modified version of the existing validation packages MuonHitTest, MuonEvtValidator and MuonSimValUtils by Nectarios Benekos. The output of the EvtValidator which gives a overview of the validation of the new geometry can be found below. In these plots we compare the two geometries on the hit level of the simulation.

A known issue of the EvtValidator is that statistical effects do not enter directly in the plots and can only be estimated by the number of hits per Station ID Name. The error bars are representing statistics within the chamber types without effects from global statistics. The plots show good agreement for all technologies between the two detector descriptions.
