Introduction to School on LHC Physics at National Centre for Physics, Islamabad
Introduction of the LHC school at NCP
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC), at CERN, Switzerland, is the world’s largest man-made particle accelerator to probe the standard model of particle physics and beyond. In July, 2012, the CERN has announced the exciting discovery of Higgs Boson, a milestone achievement in the history of particle physics. In the years 2015-16, the enhanced centre of mass energy of proton-proton collisions at 13
TeV and higher luminosities at the LHC have played a crucial role to investigate the physics of interest. In this year and onwards, many other interesting results are expected to come from CERN.
NCP is regularly organising schools on LHC Physics since 2009, in coordination with AS-ICTP. Many of well-known physicists and field experts from all over the world join this school to train the next generation of LHC physicists. Along the same lines, the focus of this 7th school on LHC Physics is also to build and strengthen the knowledge of undergraduate and graduate students, and young researchers in the field. The school will be covering physics-oriented lectures, data analysis tutorials and hands-on exercises designed by various local and foreign experts.

Purpose of the school and Tutorial Exercises
The purpose of this School is to introduce young researchers in particular graduate students how to analyze the data from LHC. These schools cover the Experimental Particle Physics lectures and training of data analysis techniques related to the
CMS detector. Many national and international speakers mainly from CERN, Geneva (Switzerland) delivered lectures covering all the major topics of the field. National and international community has considered the above-mentioned series of LHC schools very promising and successful.

Welcome to the 7th School on LHC Physics at National Centre for Physics, Islamabad, PAKISTAN. Here are some pre-exercises for the school, the purpose of these exercises is to become familiar with the basic software tools required to perform physics analysis at the school. Please run and complete these exercises. Questions for each exercise are in
red font. A large amount of additional information about these exercises is available in the twikis that we reference. Please remember that twikis evolve but aim to provide the best information at any time.
The SLP18@NCP exercises (pre-exercises as well as exercises during the school) are intended to be as generic as possible. Local computer accounts will be provided to all participants during the school and will be delivered to you in advance. It is very important for participants to use the pre-exercises as a setup tool, so we recommend for everyone to use the laptop they intend to bring with them at the school (Limited Desktops will also be provided during the school. In most cases laptops will need to be registered to be used in the local school network, so our IT department will help you in this regard or contact directly to the organizer of the school.
There are several sets of pre-exercises. As outlined above, if you are going through the pre-exercises in preparation to attending a SLP18@NCP, we strongly recommend using the laptop you intend to bring to the school and logging into the local cluster of NCP.
For the exercises that will be done during the school, instructions on those exercises will be found on twikis similarly to the pre-exercises.
