IPMI BMC

This procedure explains what to do if a BMC in a ROS PC fails and has to be replaced

  1. Spare BMCs are kept in a cupboard in 4-R-7 and a drawer in USA15 (Contact MarkusJoos for the keys)
  2. Before a BMC can be used in the ROS PC one has to load it with the proper F/W. The procedure for loading the F/W is:
    1. Find a unused ROS PC that is connected to a screen and keyboard (e.g. the one in 4-R-7)
    2. Turn it off and remove the power cables
    3. Insert the new BMC
    4. Re-install the power cables
    5. Boot if from the USB memory stick of MarkusJoos
    6. Run "setup"
    7. Stop the PC, remove the power cables, extract the BMC
  3. Install the BMC in the final PC (see above)
  4. When the PC is started up ipnmac should be run automatically with the proper IP address
  5. Try to ping the BMC
