Shift Leader Instructions For Physics Running and Preparing for Physics When Ramping to 3.5 TeV per Beam

DATE:_____________________________ SHIFT LEADER:_______________________________

LHC FILL Numbers:__________________ SHIFT: Unchecked checkbox DAY (7-15) Unchecked checkbox EVENING (15-23) Unchecked checkbox OWL (23-7)

In case of a shift change in the middle of this procedure, the check-list has to be handed over to the next shift leader (Mind, the process only ends after the cosmic run)
Please CHECK all checkboxes consciously!

Conditions

  • If it is the first physics run after some time of Beam Off or Beam Machine Development, and %TOOLTIP{TEXT="Relevant operations basically are : Exemple 1 / Exemple 2 / Exemple 3" FONTCOLOR="#336699" TITLE="More Details" SHADOW="true" SHADOWCOLOR="#ccaacc" FONTSIZE="16px"}% relevant operations %TOOLTIP{END}% have been performed, do the following:
    • Unchecked checkbox Do not allow any development activities in parallel (no local runs or minidaq)
    • Unchecked checkbox Check that the %TOOLTIP{TEXT=" the button is the top part of the gray cabinet in the opposite corner of the Control room, behind the DCS shifters" FONTCOLOR="#336699" TITLE="More Details" SHADOW="true" SHADOWCOLOR="#ccaacc" FONTSIZE="16px"}% injection %TOOLTIP{END}% is inhibited (green light off, button pushed in)
    • Unchecked checkbox Check with the DAQ Shifter that the L1/HLT trigger mode is being used is the one agreed to
      • If unsure, the shifter should call the HLT-DOC (for detailed information please check the L1 and HLT Configuration Keys)
    • Unchecked checkbox Inform all subdetectors DOC that a physics fill is about to start
  • Unchecked checkbox The "Accelerator Mode" for colliding beam for physics should be "PROTON PHYSICS"
    • The "accelerator mode" is shown on LHC page 1 on the blue banner on top, followed by the "beam mode":
      • accelerator mode: beam mode (e.g., PROTON PHYSICS: RAMP)
    • We can also operate CMS if the accelerator mode is "BEAM SETUP", but this should not be routine operation. If the aim of the fill is physics running and the accelerator modes (BEAM SETUP or MACHINE DEVELOPMENT) are set differently from the standard (PROTON PHYSICS), then do the following:
      • Call the %TOOLTIP{TEXT="To do that dial the following number : 888888 " FONTCOLOR="#336699" TITLE="More Details" SHADOW="true" SHADOWCOLOR="#ccaacc" FONTSIZE="16px"}% CCC%TOOLTIP{END}% to get information about their plans
      • Inform _STRIP DOC if non-routine operations are planned (e.g., collimator studies).
  • Unchecked checkbox Just before an expected fill, and at regular intervals during the fill (in particular when the ramp is nearing completion), the Shift Leader should check that the "BRM summary" display (central column of BRM station screens, top screen) is updating, and that the time stamp on the plots is current.
    • If it is not updating, it should be closed and restarted from the menu bar at the top of that screen.
    • If it does not restart, or if the computer has crashed, the BRM DOC should be phoned and informed.
