The CERN Tape Archive (CTA) project

The CERN Tape Archive (CTA) project is the code name given to the ongoing development of the tape software to used to archive the physics data of LHC Physic Run 3.


Medium term planning

  • Port the tape server daemon of CASTOR into CTA - Eric Cano.
  • Develop the object store responsible for storing the archive and retrieve queues to be used to schedule tape mounts and file transfers - Eric Cano.
  • Develop the front end of CTA (command-line tools, plus an xrootd plugin) - Daniele Kruse.
  • Develop the tape archive catalog that is responsible for storing all of the critical tape meta-data (e.g. the list of files on a tape) in a backed up relational database.

Long term planning

  • Deliver the first release of CTA integrated with the EOS disk storage system by the end of 2016

Backlog of postponed tasks

  • Design and implement tape and drive dedications.
