Introduction

This TWiki topic lists service tasks and related analyses in the JMAR group for the year 2017. The group charge of the JMAR group can be found at the group's main TWiki topic JetMETAlgorithmsReconstruction.

Service tasks in CMS are "services towards the effective operation of the detector and all software and computing necessary for later physics analysis." (MoA)

The service tasks in the JMAR group are in the project "Offline And Computing" and "PPD", in particular, these tasks:

  • Offline And Computing - Analysis tools (JetMet POG maintenance)
  • Offline And Computing - Reconstruction (JetMet POG reco maintenance)
  • Offline And Computing - Simulation (JetMet POG simulation code maintenance)
  • PPD - AlCaDB (JetMet POG: Jet flavour tagging maintainance)
  • PPD - AlCaDB (JetMet POG: Puppi calibration and validation)

You can earn service points for service tasks (EPR, Experimental Physics Responsibilities). If you are planning to work on service tasks in the JMAR group, please discuss your plans with the JMAR conveners (contact information provided below). After the discussion, group leaders or PIs of your institution need to make pledges at iCMS http://cms.cern.ch/iCMS/admin/epr. Later, the pledges and services will be reviewed by the JME group and the project managers of "Offline software" for the approval.

Service tasks that you are planning to work on might not be listed on this twiki. If this is the case, please contact and discuss with the JMAR conveners. It is possible to define new service tasks that you propose.

Primary deliverables of the service tasks in the JMAR group are physics objects. These deliverables need to be delivered in a format in which these can be easily used by other CMS members, mainly for their physics analyses. Relevant formats of deliverables include software code in CMSSW, TWiki documentations (WorkBook, SWGuide), and user supports.

In addition to the services, the JMAR group is active in publications and conference presentations. We release PAS (Physics Analysis Summaries) and publish papers in peer-reviewed journals. We actively presents our results at topical workshops, e.g., BOOST workshops. An important clarification is that PAS, papers, conference presentations are not deliverables for services. You will not earn service points by delivering those. Your contributions to public results will be recognized as being authors of supporting Analysis Notes, i.e., in the same way as in PAGs.

Lastly, we will outline an example of an ideal scenario of working in the JMAR group, by which you can earn service points and have a well-cited publication. First, you develop (or choose) an algorithm, which can be, for example, a jet-substructure or a pile-up subtraction. You evaluate the performance of the algorithm in CMS data. You write preliminary results of the performance evaluation in a PAS and present them at a BOOST workshop. Then, you finalize the evaluation and publish the results in a peer-reviewed journal. At the same time while you are working on the evaluation, you implement the algorithm in CMSSW and integrate it into official CMSSW releases. You write the instruction of the software on TWiki so that no-experts of JetMET algorithms can easily use it for physics analyses without knowing the details of your algorithm. You support users, for example, by answering technical questions they ask. As a result, you have a publication and earn service points. In addition, when users publish their analysis results using your algorithm, they will cite your paper.
